Here it is guys and gals! Having been at SWA for many years I have seen many folks leave to go to greener pastures. I would like to hear how that has worked out. I personally can't recall any success stories up until now. The future may change things. For now I am all ears!

I've been on property less than 2 years and already had a classmate leave for United. He left because of the commute to Oakland (lives east coast) and the "on paper" quicker upgrade to Captain. He's not the first and DEFINITELY will not be the last. In fact, I'd bet money that some of our new hiring is based on a hedge of some leaving for Delta, United, American. Like others have said, when you retire, let me know how it worked out.

I know guys who left North West for TWA and Pan Am in the early 1980's. This industry is too unstable to try to guess which carrier is going to be around in 10-20 years.
What looks like a sure thing today could be seen as a huge blunder in 5 years, given a new CEO, a Merger, a Bankruptcy, etc. Nobody has a crystal ball that works 100% of the time.
It's a crap shoot.
Roll the dice and hope for the best and then don't drive yourself crazy thinking "I could'a, should'a, would'a."

Totally agree with the crap shoot comment! As I said we have folks ready to leave (a few mention it now and then) to go to DAL, etc.
Just wondering if anyone can give them an example of what they would call a successful move away from SWA.
I also will say that I believe that at this time many could be more successful with the dynamics currently at the "Legacy" carriers. Just wondering.

Wow, I'm surprised that this even a serious conversation. Just yesterday it seems like SWA was one of the three hot tickets. But with long upgrades vs. movement and eventual widebody pay at the legacies I guess I can see why.

Like I said, after being at SWA for a long time I am still waiting for a success story. I totally understand the commute issue and believe that if someone makes a decision that benefits his family because of a commute that is unbearable it can be considered a success. Have them contribute to this thread so we can all understand.
I also believe that some of the hiring is based on an attrition factor. I also believe that those that do leave in the current environment will be more successful than those who previously did. When that decision is evident may be some time (retirement perhaps). 23+ years for me and haven't heard what can be called a successful decision yet. Again, I am all ears.

Have you run into people who have gotten to SWA in the last 5-7 years or so who now wish they had stayed where they were previously?

Excellent question NK! I can honestly say I haven't. Maybe some military guys who loved that lifestyle. I personally loved the lifestyle until I got married.
