Actually, no FO would be logging PIC, only the captains would. While we can legally log the PIC while in the left seat as an FO, I don't know any who do. Delta certainly doesn't consider it PIC time for the FO.

That brings up another interesting question. Say the flight is being operated as a 3 man crew, but could've been legally scheduled as a 2 man crew. Maybe the return requires 3 pilots or its just under the max time for 2. Would the 3rd pilot really be able to log anything? They're not required to be there for that flight under the regs. |
I've always been very conservative logging flight time, but if I wasn't the PIC, I'd only log seat time. If I was the PIC, I logged all of it, because the PIC is the PIC and no one else on the aircraft can assume that responsibility just because you aren't in the seat.

Kept a separate column - copilot/pic for when I was FO and flying. That way different companies could figure out, based on their requirements, how much pic or fo time I had.
For FAA requirements (ie consolidation) the company only tracks seat time. So you get full credit on 2 man crews, 2/3's on 3 man, and 1/2 on 4 man crews. So with 1000 hrs on type the company records show 700 hrs in type. As Captain I log all time as PIC but make a note to indicate PF or PM status. |
First, as an FO you should log the entire thing as total time. Then, log the time in the front seats only (right OR left) as SIC. NO PIC while the captain is sleeping BS. I can't think of anyone in the USA who would not look at that crosseyed if you did so. Maybe in other countries, but I wouldn't do it here. The time not in the seat (sleeping in the back, or in the jumpseat below 10,000 as IRO) I used to keep track of in a separate "IRO" column (and did not include it in the SIC column, only the total). If anyone ever were to disagree with the total time I had logged, they could subtract the total of the "IRO" column from total time and bingo, problem solved for their purposes. However even as a resting crewmember, you are required to be there per part 121 (and now 117) based on the length of the flight. So the total duration of flight, which counts towards your duty limits etc, matters, therefore I logged as I was a required crewmember during all of it.
As captain it changes; you are PIC even when you are passed out in the bunk. It is all total and all PIC. |

I think some FO's do keep track of the time they are in the left seat. I usually saw the senior FO always sit there to log that time. I was speaking of CA PIC time. Delta may not count it but I believe it is legal for the FO to log it.

You're flying in Jets large enough to have augmented crews and you're still keeping a logbook?
Here is the thing, you can log PIC as an FO but why? I know for a fact that with corporate pilots Delta only counts the PIC time when you were the real Pic, meaning if you're a typed pilot and the Chief pilot puts you in the left seat for a leg you can log it as Pic but to Delta you were never the real Pic. |
