I'm sure we would all love some hard numbers, but even a guess at how many are in now at all the branches and a historical percentage of those who leave would be a good start.

This is the only semi-official figure I've read. From an AW&ST article:

In addition, about 2,400 qualified pilots leave the U.S. military each year.

My guess is since the ATP requirement change, airlines will have to recruit from the military since a civilian is going to have a much harder time getting to the 1500 hour mark than a military pilot who only needs to hit 750

Interesting article by DAL Capt Lee Moak, and also ALPA President.

More "shortage" debunkery

Were you in the Hawg in Korea? When were you there?

Negative. 1,000 hours if a graduate with a degree in aviation management with no less than 60 credit hours offered from ERAU, or Purdue and other universities.

I thought it was 750 hours if graduated from a MIL flight school too.

From FAA Press release:

-Military pilots with 750 hours total time as a pilot;
-Graduates holding a Bachelor's degree with an aviation major with 1,000 hours total time as a pilot;
-Graduates holding an Associate's degree with an aviation major with 1,250 hours;
-Pilots who are at least 21 years old with 1,500 flight hours.

^ Those are correct, however they are used to obtain a restricted ATP. It is my understanding the majors will not hire with a restricted ATP. I believe only the regionals will hire with a restricted ATP.

There's no such thing as a "military flight school." If you're military and you've got your wings & 750 hrs, you qualify.

Quick question for those in the know... do R-ATPs AUTOMATICALLY become ATPs when the 1500 hr mark is reached? There are some helo guys in my unit that are hoping so.
