I am military and retiring from an overseas assignment this year. I have my apps in and trying to get hired by Delta. Since I am retiring from overseas, our move back to the states is the only one the government pays for. Therefore, I would like to end up where we want to settle down.

Looking at all the recent hiring stats if I am lucky enough to get hired I am expecting a MD-88 to NYC. My understanding is that there is a one year equipment lock for the MD-88. After that, I could apply for another airframe.

I have been reading that Delta is starting to expand Seattle, especially in the 737. Can anyone give me an idea on how hard it would be for me to get to Seattle and how long they think it would take if I started out on the MD-88?

Maybe you should get hired before you worry about that. Move where you want and worry about your commute afterwards.

If you really want to live in SEA, get hired by Alaska.

 

Hope to get a 737 any base. I don't think there's a freeze to change base, just aircraft. Settle the family into base housing at Gig Harbor, and commute until you can get a bid to SEA.

I fly the airbus as a cap, out of USA, but im trying to join delta , and definetily I will prefer seattle, I'm living right now in San diego CA, do you know average how many years to get seattle or west cost base

Thanks for your service and hope your transition back to CONUS goes well. Check out the Delta Hiring and Delta Poolie threads, they have most of the gouge. DL is expanding big time in SEA. If you get an interview, get hired, and have the opportunity to pick the 73 out of the schoolhouse, you'll be able to commute to NYC, ATL, DTW, SLC, and LAX until you work your way back to SEA. With the increase in international block hours across th DL system, many new hires are getting the 757/767ER right out of indoc, and as current ER pilots bid off to greener pastures, we expect new hires to be able to get SLC, LAX and SEA fairly quickly.

I recommend burning your PCS to move where you and the family want to live long term. It sux to commute, but with the current movement and barring another 9/11, you should be able to get out west pretty quickly at DL..and you'll have 1000 guys underneath you in a year at DL vs only 150 at AS..good insurance if the crap hits the fan (again).

I disagree with Packrat. I say you have all available info before you get hired. Just remember, if someone says it take 2 years to get Seattle, because the bottom pilot (plug) was hired hired 2 years ago, that doesn't mean you'll have the same 2 years the plug did. It could take more or less time depending on growth/contraction and the desire of who they hired.

As far as furlough protection goes, using APC numbers 1000/11723 (Delta) puts you closer to the bottom than 150/1567 (Alaska) on a percentage basis.

 

To all interested in SEA. Check back in about a week and we will have a much better picture once we see how junior the initial 737 bids go.

Consider just moving to where you want to live for a while and not move again. I recommend living near family. You'll be on the road a lot and it gives great peace of mind to know that your wife has family support if something happens while you're gone. If you gamble on Delta bases, you might get hired elsewhere and end up commuting anyway. Personally for me I don't think this job is worth multiple moves, that was half the reason I got out of the AF, to stop moving my family around.

 

We're still flying in SEA? I thought we gave up, after all our 737's started pull off to the side.

 

No we didn't but give it up yet but last I heard they were still waiting for a legal TO alternate.
