Best Merger Representation $1 Million can buy
The UAL MEC is reminding it's members to vote on the Merger Assessment to fund an account earmarked to pay legal advisers in the event of a merger.
The vote gives membership the opportunity to approve an assessment of .5% for a period of 6 months and is expected to raise about One Million Dollars.
Based on UAL bankruptcy experience, many pilots know that $1 million dollars doesn't last very long. Used in the same sentence as lawyer, $1 million is a drop in the bucket. If the ballot is approved, most UAL pilots will pony-up a total of about $275 dollars over the course of 6 months. While the per pilot contribution isn't a hardship, the fund isn't much either.
Instead of mandating to United Airlines that any merger must not disenfranchise it's pilots, the UAL-MEC has aimed low and is now at risk of missing that goal too.
One million dollars will allow the MEC to make a lot of noise, but little else. In the end, my guess is that they'll settle for the ALPA standard:
