Which combo would create the largest airline?
With all the mergers reportedly on the horizon, which combination would become the new #1 in terms of size?
|
American and United
|
AA and anybody I think.
|
A better question is, which combo would be able to make money?

United/USAir, or Delta/NWA? Who will be BIGGER....
Does it really matter? And if it does, are you asking about size in terms of... employees? passengers carried? number of airplanes? operating revenue? bags of peanuts? |
DAL + NWA + Air France/KLM. AF is eyeballing Alitalia or whatever MIGHT (hopefuly not) be left of them in the future.
As far as only US airlines combo you got to look ahead too and see how much they'd overlap and downsize. Which with our pilot brains is hard to do. |
After the probable downsizing, it is anyone's guess.
|
I'd have to agree with rickair7777.
American and anyone else. Who makes the most money? That's anyones guess. Now where's my crystal ball? SF |
Right now Delta is bigger than United and US Air is a little bigger than NWA. So, you would have to say US Air/UAL would be bigger.

It's really all conjecture because you can't just add airline A's numbers to airline B's numbers and have a result. Places where significant overlap occurs would require significant divestitures by the government to gain approval.
That's one of the big reasons DAL & NWA like each other, because they believe that they will be forced to divest virtually nothing because of very little overlap. In contrast, as an example, if USAIR had been successful in it's hostile takeover of DAL, one of the New York shuttle operations (probably DAL's) would have went bye-bye. So you'd be merging just to turn around and sell off a highly profitable section of your business. -If UAL and NWA were to get together, big problems with the Asia overlap -If AA and CAL teamed up, big problems with south of the border overlap -AA and UAL, Chicago overlap -DAL and CAL, New York overlap Things like that |
