This. This author doesn't back the claim up with any credible (inside or otherwise) information, and he doesn't seem to be a reputed source of industry knowledge. He's an unknown quantity and lacks any real credibility. Hell, the article is vague enough that you could replace "Mesa" with just about any other regional carrier and it could seem plausible. But people are talking about this article now, and no press is bad press. So maybe he accomplished what he set out for?

In this case, the "blind squirrel" ain't finding the nut. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Item 1.01. Entry into a Material Definitive Agreement.

On September 27, 2022, Mesa Air Group, Inc. (the “Company”), its wholly owned subsidiary, Mesa Airlines (“Mesa”), and United Airlines, Inc. (“United”) entered into an Aircraft Purchase Agreement (the “Purchase Agreement”), which provides for the sale of 18 CRJ-700 aircraft owned by Mesa to United. The Company expects the net proceeds from the sale of such aircraft will be approximately $50,000,000.

The Purchase Agreement provides that each aircraft will be delivered “as is, where is” subject to and with the benefit of a related lease agreement. Under the terms of the Purchase Agreement, the Company is providing customary representations and warranties for a transaction of this type including authorization, no conflicts, validity of agreement, regulatory matters, good and marketable title, airworthiness, no liens, aircraft records, manufacturer warranties, and no brokers’ fees. United has agreed to deposit a specified sum per aircraft with FAA counsel, to be applied toward the purchase of each aircraft. The closing of the sale of each aircraft is subject to certain customary closing conditions, including the execution of mutually acceptable sale and lease assignment and assumption documentation, and United’s satisfactory inspection of the aircraft. The Purchase Agreement provides for a downward adjustment in the purchase price based on a formula set forth therein if the closing date in respect of an aircraft occurs after January 31, 2023.

The foregoing descriptions of the Purchase Agreement and the transactions contemplated thereby do not purport to be complete and are qualified in their entirety by reference to the full text of the Purchase Agreement, which will be filed as an exhibit to the Company’s Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2022.
$2.5M for a CRJ700 seems really cheap. Anybody know why United is getting them for roughly 1/10th their street value?

Two guesses that come to mind: Does Mesa have any other prospective buyers at the table willing to purchase 18 CRJ's at once? UAL is getting a bulk discount.
The other guess is: Maybe they're due for costly heavy checks and that factors into the discounted price?

I would say it’s because Mesa has been the one doing maintenance on them and they’re POS’s and near worthless now

I would have to agree with this. There is no reputable industry analyst reporting this that I can find and I have tried to find additional sources. Also, I've been watching Mesa's stock price to see how the market is reacting and the stock price is up and the analysts have a "Hold" rating on it. If there are only two more years left on the AA contract, bankruptcy seems like an inefficient and very expensive way to get out of the contract, if Chapter 11 would even allow them to do that.

Is United leasing the planes back to Mesa? Does Mesa have the option to repurchase them? The agreement wasn't attached to the 8K filing so I couldn't see if that is the case. If that is the case, then wouldn't a lower sales price result in a lower lease payment? Isn't this often a method to obtain cash?

Clapped out 2 year old CRJ700s are definitely
not worth anywhere close to $25 million. $25 mil is roughly what DL/B6 paid for launch customer pricing for A220s. New MAX8s are going for $30-$35mil. Here’s a thread with ranges for current plane values. https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1475667

CRJ list prices new were around $25m iirc, and airlines never pay list price for planes. Factor in 20 years of getting beat up flying RJ routes and garbage mesa maintenance, $2.5 seems about right.
