Hey you can't get a DUI and then go into the military as a pilot right?

Is that a statement......or a question?:confused:

Typically a DUI is the kiss of death for MOST military officer careers. I have seen some people recover but in today's military, DUI's will pretty much keep you from being promoted and limit if not remove your chance of getting follow on flying orders. How the recruiters handle it when they are recruiting however, I know nothing about.

There was a captain at Vance that got a DUI, and he was going nowhere. He was a FAIP and that was it, no follow on orders, no promotions. He was out a couple months after I left I think.

I've been an instructor at Columbus in the T-37 for 3 years now and I can tell anyone with certainty...a student with a DUI is DONE! Trying to get a pilot slot with a DUI on file...highly doubtful. DUI after you get your wings...probably the kiss of death but it depends on the individual and circumstances. Just pay the cab fare...it's way cheaper in the long run.

Once you are IN the military it will kill your career, and they are very upfront about that so you really can't complain that you weren't warned.

If it was recent, you're toast unless you are young enough to wait a few years. However a DUI (or even light drug use) in your distant past may not disqualify you from getting a commission and a flying slot. It likely puts you at a competetive disadvantage, but it may not be disqualifying...the policies and competetive realties flucuate with supply and demand, so only a pilot recruiter could give you a straight answer (NOT the enlisted recruiter at the strip mall...he'll tell you that you can't be an officer or a pilot but he can get you a job fixing truck engines :rolleyes: )

What if the DUI was aged four or five years, and you've since earned all your civilian ratings (- ATP) and a 4 year degree?

Not sure but Uncle Sam will find out about it regardless of how old it is. You probably should talk to a recruiter.

In the navy I believe that you can have two alcohol related incidents and your gone no matter who you are or what your rank is. A guy in my last squadron got one and the CO continued to let him fly pending the outcome. That CO left and when the new guy took over my buddy never flew again. It was his second alcohol related incident and once he was convicted he was separated from the navy.

I would recommend calling an officer recruiting station and asking them.

On another note, it's crap that an active duty pilot gets a DUI and his flying career in the civilain world in not affected. In the mil the standard punishment for a DUI is an Art 15 which is non-judicial punishment. It is not on the guys record and the airlines have no way of knowing and they do not ask. I used to be an Air Force cop and we busted guys for DUIs all the time at Randolph AFB in the late 90s and a lot of them ended up flying for the majors.

But a DUI before the military? Forget about it, getting a UPT slot would be impossible. As a Lt I also worked in AFOATS and AFROTC and saw the process first hand.
