Default Palace Chase Equals No Medical Benefits

Just a word to the wise for those of you palace chasing out there. You are not entitled to 180 days of "free" transitional medical benefits. I was under the impression that my family would get 180 days like any other separation, but that's not the case. Everyone I've talked to for six months has said I'm covered but when my orders were printed I was slapped in the face. I found this out 12 days prior to my final out so now I'm scrambling to find coverage for mom and the kids.

The good thing for me is that I'm told I'll get full benefits again when I start my KC-135 Reserve Training in August. However, after this recent experience, I'd appreciate any gouge that anyone has concerning medical benefits while training in the 135.

Caesar,
I was told they same thing as well on my out processing only to find out later that it was not a true statement. Give the great people at DEERS a call and see if they have changed your status from Active Duty to Reserve yet? If they haven't you're still getting Medical coverage. (800-538-9552) I'm kinda in the same boat until I start training as well in August and my wife is going to pickle in the middle of July.(Great planning on our part) So, just to keep things somewhat reliable we might end up paying the 1,996 for the TRICARE continuation care.
