Default What is a sortie?

Guys,

Sorry for the ignorent question, but what is it?

A single flight, from what I've heard?

1. So mil. pilots count flight time and sorties?
I.e. example: 200 sorties, 220 flight hours.

2. If you do touch-and-go's and/or multiple instrument approaches is it still one sortie?
3. Are all flights considered sorties, those in training a/c vs combat?

Thanks

Think of a sorite as a take off to a full stop. As a C-2 guy we would count our flights to the ship as two sorties. One t/o from Norfolk, land on the boat, start back up and then t/o, land back in Norfolk. The military guys count flight time from wheels up to wheels down, plus 5 mins (that 5 mins comes in handy). Sometimes I have been at the hold short for two hours or been engines turning waiting on the pax for 45 mins, we don't count that even though you are in charge all that time. All flights are sorties, training, combat, operational... Some airlines let us add .2 or .3 hours per sortie to our totals to make our numbers more life the GA pilots. This helps us convert our times to be more like "block" time. You will usually find guys in the transport airplanes with more time but less sorties (unless your are a C-130, or C-2 guy) and the fighter guys with less time but more sorties. Does that help?

Yes it helps a lot, thank you!

So sortie is kind of like switches on to switches off at the home base?

The count of time and "all are sorties" makes sense.

I served in a foreign military and want to attempt to put my sorties in the military time section on the airlineapps site.
I wonder what the airlines would think about it i.e. would they only want to see the US Armed Forces time in that section?
Should I not put it in there?

Thanks again

Doesn't have to be switches off at "home" base. Just switches on to switches off. You might make four or five stops before returning to home base. I would put your time in like it asks for. If you track your time as "block" time (door closed to door open) then don't account for sorties. Only use the sortie number if it the prior. Good luck to you...

I think airlineapps tracks sorties since some airlines add .3 hours per sortie to correct for taxi-out time.
