Voluntary Recall to AD?
#71
While I agree that it doesn't make sense to send recent UPT grads to UAV's, I don't think that argument would work on some of our leadership. How did the guys that got banked back in the 90's handle the transition? I'm not sure how that program worked but they didn't even get to fly, did they?
I swear, the more I see what the USAF does, the more I realize what a death spiral it is in.

Death spiral? Whoa, that's a little overboard. We need bodies in the UAV pipeline now. It's a quick fix. I don't think it's a good long term fix, but if those increased orbits protect our troops on the ground in OEF/OEF, I don't give a rats butt if Lt Johnny Longshanks is sent to a UAV for 4 years after UPT or midway thru his/her first MWS tour.

Yep, death spiral. Personnel problems, aging aircraft problems, development programs over budget, gangs infiltrating the ranks, losing nukes ... etc.
The USAF is always "quick fixing" things, reaction instead of proacting.

I sent an email to AFPC asking for more information and this is what I got back in reply. I retired last year from the U-2 and unlike what WarEagle thinks, the U-2 is a great job.
"If you are receiving this e-mail, it means that you have expressed
interest in possible voluntary recall to active duty by providing your
contact information and comments. The purpose of this e-mail is to
provide you with what limited information is currently available
regarding this recall.
Due to the rapid expansion of unmanned aircraft systems and other
emerging mission/rated requirement sets which directly support GWOT,
demand for experienced, rated officers is greatly exceeding current
inventories. There are many different options the Air Force is
considering implementing to help lighten the burden our rated force
currently carries, one of which is a voluntary recall to active duty.
For your information, a proposed recall package is in coordination, the
details of which are still being worked. Further information will be
released as it becomes available.
Please stay tuned, and thank you for your interest."

Does anyone know the rules on having to serve in the Ready Reserves?
I separated after serving all of my military commitments, no VSP. When I did the final out paperwork with my MPF, I specifically signed a piece of paper and was briefed that I was not going to be in the RR because I served my full commitment. However, I have received two mailers from AFRC asking me for an update of my personal information and my medical situation.
So I am confused ... the paperwork also says I can use my military ID to get on base and go the BX / Commissary. That's news to me since they scraped the stickers off my truck and took my military ID.

There are too many variables to know the answer, each person has a different set of circumstances. It depends a lot on when you were commissioned and what rank you were when you left.
If you were an O-4 or above you pretty much are RR for the rest of your life, unless to resigned your commission. If you were O-3 and below it works out to about half the time you spent on active duty, once again unless you resigned your commission.
However I have heard of cases with no RR commitment they are rare. It would be best to call AFPC directly for your situation. And if you're really board Title 10 of the USC can be found online.

MD10PLT... good info. Thank you. I am going to call AFPC. If they are going to put me in the RR for which I don't care, and then send me paperwork on the great benefits of the RR, they by all means, give me that ID card and let me exercise my benefits.

For what it's worth I just did a search of Title 10 because I was curious what the exact wording was. All it says is the SAF will deternine the length of service for the Ready Reserve. So basically it comes down to what were the regulations at the time you were commissioned.
As a side note I did learn a few things. Retired Officers are not actually in the Ready Reserves they are in a subset called the Retired Reserves. However, it says these guys can be called back to active duty at any time even if you were a Reserve Officer at the time of retirement. I always knew Regular Officers were on the hook forever, but didn't know Reserve Officers could be too.

What does your DD214 say, mine says Discharged and Resigned Commission. All the personnel folks I spoke with said I am free and clear
because of those 2 items on my DD214.
