CAFTT - anyone doing/done this?

Yeah, I have never heard of anyone else so excited about one of these deals either. Mox have you ever been to Kirkuk? It isnt a garden destination but also isnt the worst in Iraq either. Good luck to you but I have to admit I wouldn't trade with you in a million years.
I hope it is everything you hoped for, I truly do. Especially since you will be one of the 50,000 who remain past next august...

thanks...and yes I've been to Kirkuk...just a couple times about three years ago. That was during a 120-day stint at Balad.
and yes, I'll be one of the 50,000...that's part of what appeals to me. Not really a combat mission, but more of the training side of things. Which as I've said a few times, seems like a refreshing change to try something different.

Don't forget CAPTF. I was one of the last 179ers working with Afghan Fixed Wing Sqdn in Kabul. Highlight of my 23yrs. Guys after me got qualed in the An-32. Coming up is FMS sale of ex-Italian AF G222's (like exUSAF C27A). IPs needed for those, also in Kabul for 365 I'm sure. Also down the road will be T-6 and likely AT-6B.
The Afghans are very appreciative of what we do for them, except for some of the leadership who resist our democratic and merit-based leadership style.
Living in ISAF compound was much nicer than the KBR greasy food of Bagram or just about anywhere else. Europeans know how to wage war.

Mox Nix,
I did 180+ with the Iraqi Army. Showed up to work as a plans officer in Baghdad for the New Iraqi Air Force - ended up a base commander in the field at Tadji (just south of Balad). It was one of the greatest tours in 20+ years in the USMC. This will be very rewarding. Try to learn as much about their culture as you can. It will really help you figure out how to teach and get a point accross - it is different in their culture on so many things. Good Luck and Godspeed.
