Left USAA last July. My rates with State Farm (2 homes and 3 cars) went down over $150 per month. Got my 6 month auto renewal from State Farm the other day. First thought was "here we go, the old bait and switch. "Rates went down another $3 per month for auto. Also got Subscriber Savings Check for $8K from USAA. Guess we will se if this was smart when it comes claim time>

Now it is every rank, Active and Reserve, former military, second generations who have never served, their kids, and anyone else who wants to join. Both of my kids have USAA and they have never been in the military. They have their kids on their auto policy and none of them have served. The risk pool has definately been diluted.

I think what's going on here is the senior and upper middle management salaries, bonuses, and career growth opportunities are limited by gross revenues. Unless you can convince all the members to buy more insurance, the easiest way to increase gross revenue in an insurance co-op is to widen the pool of potential members.

In this case, the available growth demographics are higher risk than the original pool of military officers. Additional growth into these new demographics is essentially guaranteed to increase claims and thus member premiums...but it will allow higher pay for top management.

Translation: USAA is no longer serving the interests of it's members, but rather management.

Could this be fixed by the members? In theory, yes but in reality it would take a lot of members banding together to elect leaders willing to rock the boat. Daunting challenge.

I'll probably be switching insurers soon, after a little more research. I see no financial benefit to sharing auto insurance risk with a bunch junior enlisted. Probably better off pooling with the general population at State Farm.

Certainly everyones situation is different...having suffered a total loss home claim with USAA....overall I was very pleased with their service... my friends with State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide....not so much. Recently my mother had a total loss claim on a car.... 4 weeks to get her insurance check...pathetic..... while I certainly dont discount issues and problems that people have had with USAA and I agree the pool is diluted so to speak.... the grass is not always greener on the other side of the street. oh...another State Farm story...my mother has lived in the same house 40 years.... thru several major hurricanes..and many minor ones....NEVER not even after Katrina did she have a claim. after 37 years state farm...cancelled her wind/hail insurance...NEVER a claim ever... just saying.

And I really did like my $315 dollar SSA check this year :)

Last post was 3 months ago... I am getting ready to pull the trigger on USAA....

Anyone who left USAA, still glad they did? TIA

As posted on another thread... getting ready to dump USAA... anyone regret leaving USAA? Recommendations? TIA

Yep, still glad I did. Left 5 or 6 months ago. Got more coverage at a lower deductible for significantly less cost. 3 weeks ago my 2013 VW got nailed with hail damage at the DAL parking lot. My new insurer, Selective of South Carolina, said fax me an estimate and sent me a check the day after receiving the estimate. Car looks perfect. I'm happy AND I received a $6,200 SSA check from USAA the same day that the VW check came in.

No regrets. I use Geico and Farmers now.

I'm glad I left USAA, but I wish they wouldn't have started sucking. They were the best back in the day...

Same experience as many others on this thread. Been with USAA for 20 years and used to be very happy, but I am getting tired of yearly ritual of 5% or more homeowner's premium increases for no apparent reason. When I call to complain, the answer is always the same..."Replacement values have increased in your area."

I left them in 2002 or so after 18 years of service. They simply were not competitive with Allstate with their (the latter) house and car package deal.

I tried to stay with USAA, but they couldn't even come close.

No regrets, I've saved thousands of $$ over the years, and several claims were dealt with promptly.

USAA has been diluted. What used to be very specialized is now just another insurance/financial company.
