USAA serves to help some groups by robbing others. I will tell of what crooks they are for the rest of my life. When I was active duty I had a devastating roof collapse on my home. I had USAA, it seemed like the standard thing to do. They sent me a few thousand dollars in a check that didn't amount to anything I could do. I had a number of quotes given and sent them in, they still wouldn't budge. The kneecapper was that they depreciated the value of the roofing by an extreme amount....it was a nearly new roof that was collapsed by a Texas severe thunderstorm.

I'm an officer's kid- so have been USAA since born. I've never had any issues with them- however have not had anything in the way of claims, either.

I had a friend that was a state farm agent look at my coverage and what they could do about a year ago- apparently the USAA rates were way better than them.

I guess mileage varies? I, like many others, don't like that they extended service to "everyone" though..

News alert!! You were the start of "everyone." Don't know if you were/are an active duty/reserve military officer, but when I joined USAA in 1969 it was Active Duty Military Officers only. Now it is every rank, Active and Reserve, former military, second generations who have never served, their kids, and anyone else who wants to join. Both of my kids have USAA and they have never been in the military. They have their kids on their auto policy and none of them have served. The risk pool has definately been diluted.

Even when I joined in 1988 USAA was a close knit business. Remember when half of the military officers had the USAA bumper sticker on their cars. Things did change in the late 1990's, however I have always been pleased with them. Motorcycle insurance was the only time I did not use them.

I have had USAA auto insurance for a decade now, zero claims, and the premiums have only steadily gone up - PCS or no PCS year.. I'll be shopping also now since my newest relocation estimate had it going up 20 percent, and it's a nicer area in Arizona than California where I was located. I think I am starting to subsidize the pedestrian hitters out there :)

I will say customer service is spot on when you call in, but I also have "electronics addendum" to property insurance, and of course the one time my laptop fries due to moving damage (not pcs related) after much time and energy in filing a claim to see what happened, they simply told me it's too old and denied my claim.

FYI guys/gals- Thanks to reading this, I just quoted Geico, Progressive, and Liberty insurance and well, just cut 50% off my rate by going to Geico (yes, I know it sounds like an ad but gotta say thanks for the heads up) USAA is not on the ivory tower in my mind any more

Won't some of you stay and help subsidize my daughter?

cactipilot 12-14-2012 05:27 PM

Sorry, Albief- I hope her rates don't go up too much :)

FYI

Just got my statement. In the comments section, they stated membership is now open to all retirees and those who have been honorably discharged.

I "joined" (kicked off Dad's policy) in 1982 as the son of an USMC officer and have been pleased with the level of service received.
