Default AFR/ANG and airlines

Hey guys... just curious to hear from those of you with "2 lives." Does your monthly reserve at the airline get reduced due to time taken for mil leave? (The monthly drill, plus any additional duties). Seems like getting the same reserve pay as everyone else would be a bit too good to be true, especially if you dropped a trip to leave. Thanks!

If you drill on days off you don't lose airline pay. If I drop a rsv day or trip, my guarantee is docked accordingly unless I make it up. It's been that way at 2 airlines for me so far. I'll assume it's the same almost everywhere...

At my airline, they want military leave identified prior to the bid. They then pre-assign it (like vacation or training) and your schedule is built around it.

They give us 2.5 hours of "virtual credit" for each military day...this counts for scheduling but not for actual pay credit. I take 6 mil days in a normal month so my line award is reduced by 15 credit hours. I kind of like it, otherwise I would be working a full schedule in addition to drilling.

If you really didn't want to get penalized, you could just bid days off for military. You would need enough seniority to get the days you want though. If you did not get a day off when needed you could always drop mil leave after the bid, in which case they would pull you off the trip (possibly at an inconvenient stopping point).

rickair7777,
So in my reserve job where I get called to show up after the bid is awarded, I just drop, know you can too, but how does Skywest treat that? Have you passed it by ESGR to get their take? Any conflicts, am curious. Continental lawsuit deals with exactly this PBS system slanted against mil folks. PM is OK.

PBS is a crock when it comes to mil leave. When I had to use it and input mil leave ahead of the bid, I'd get a reserve line cause of that virtual credit BS.

They can only ask you to input mil leave ahead of the bid, they cannot require it.

No problems, I think they know better. I do it on occasion as needed. We have pretty good middle management these days.

If you did it every month, I suppose they could call your CO and ask if it was always necessary to do it at the last minute...

Darn Straight...I like the preassignment, but if I didn't I would not be meeting the deadline.

So do you end up working much, much more than if you had only one job (i.e. the airline) ?? I have heard that juggling all three can be a bear...with Wives' saying things like "You have your job, you have the military, and you have me....choose 2!." I am going into the reserves in March and the wife is already starting to make noise about how much I will be gone

I can only speak as a fighter guy, but yes, you work a lot more! I'm single. I can't imagine that pace with a wife and kids... But people do it.

The wife needs to realize you can only afford her with jobs 1 and 2.

Its not as bad of a juggle as you think. You're doing one or the other, not both at the same time if you know how to schedule. Guard/Reserve duty usually has you home at night if you're flying locals and going to Drill Weekends.
