Default Wow

Found this link on another web-site. Glad to hear nobody on the ground or the pilot was hurt.

Well...imagine that. Some things don't add up in the report

Poor choice of wording in the article about "...Zobrist says both fuel tanks, weighing about 300 gallons each..."

They never *actually* say whether the ordinance was live or inert - though they are speaking of it as if it was live.

If it was live, and was emergency jettisoned, then I assumed that the F-16's system works similar to Boeing products (though nothing else is the same) and the ordinance would have been jettisoned in a safe condition; meaning the explosion they are talking about should not have been from the bomb itself going high order.

F-16 guys - - you thoughts on the accuracy of the report?
(Not the pilot's actions)

Glad it all turned out well.

Default F-16 CAPs (Critical Action Procedures)

If memory serves, circa 1994, the CAP for Engine Failure or Malfunction on Takeoff (not necessarily verbatim, but intent is correct):

1. Aircraft-Zoom
2. Stores-Jettison
3. If Engine not Recoverable: Eject

Sounds like this pilot had an engine problem on takeoff, and he accomplished the first two steps of the CAP. Then, he got the engine back and landed.

Not saying for sure....but sounds like it.

I think there's four of the CAPS where the second step of the CAPS is STORES-JETT (Engine Fire, Low Thrust on T/O or Low Alt, Restart, Engine Failure)

If jettisoned, all armament is released unarmed. It could still go off low order or the fuel tanks could easily have caused an explosion.

Zobrist is a great dude. I still have his xmas card from Dec 92. Him and his wife and family are standing with santa hats and smiles in the totally flattened ruins of their Homestead house post hurricane Andrew. Classic.
