There is a lot of truth to this. I got the same line, and applied pilot only.

Very true, however, there are exceptions. At least one NFO candidate in my AOCS class was able to transition to pilot before commissioning.

On the other hand, my Marine recruiter tried to get me to OCS on an infantry slot by saying I could transition when I got to Quantico since "they always need pilots." Ironically, even if I had waited for a Marine air slot, I would have wound up Navy since the Marines had a glut of pilots and the Navy was short and Marine students were doing inter-service transfers to Navy so they didn't have to do a ground tour before beginning flight school.
