Default F14 vs. F18

Hey, I just wanted to get some thoughts from the military guys on how the F18 (namely the 'E/F' model) compares to the F14. I've heard some bad things about the Super Hornet as far as turn charactaristics and acceleration (I also heard that it cant break mach 1 in level flight under 10,000 feet). Any thoughts on this subject would be much appreciated.

Hmm....

Let's discuss classified information on a public internet bulletin board.

Not a good idea.

Roger out.

I'm going to miss the F-14. One of my favorite military airplanes from a civilian standpoint.

Default Hello

Just what I've been waiting for! An opportunity to increase my posts so I can feel like a true member. Classified? I'm not quite sure what Nightflyer is talking about, but he must know something the rest of us don't. The Super Hornet is a great platform that basically fills the short comings of the Legacy Hornet! Hopefully that's not classified info and I am just that much closer to the requisite number of posts to see profiles.

Specific performance numbers on almost any military combat platform are either classified or sensitive/limited distribution.

I think what Nightflyer was trying to say is that their are the numbers that are published in Janes, then there the actual numbers and capabilities of the airframes. If one starts discussing tactics and ordnance than one may be crossing the line. As far as supersonic goes, the legacy hornet could not break the sound barrier at sea level unless it was in a dive. The Tomcat could do it in level flight 100 ft off the deck. Saw it at sea many times. The Tomcats with the newer engines could do well in a fight according to those who flew them. You never really know which one is better as the pilots who fly them will pound their chests and boast about their platform vs any other. What it really comes down to is the skill level and experience of the individual pilot. Fighter pilots say the airplane itself is only about 30% of the fight. My 2 cents.
