One more thing to consider - unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The policies change all the time, and willl change more before they would apply to you. Just know that there have been USAF officers wanting to be pilots...only to become operators of a RQ-9 or similar. Squadrons across the USAF are decreasing. We are facing historic cuts in the Dod of the next 10 years, and I'll bet we'll loose more active duty USAF squadrons and fighter squadrons. UAS does tremendous work saving lives, but may not be what you sign up for.
100% agree on TPS - you get there by doing your best and applying...and even if you fall short, you will still have done great.

It was my understanding that many of those rated officers were going to those systems before they made it a separate career field - in effect supplementing a field until production could catch up.

Actually, the tide is turning on that.

The latest CSAF letter (2 Nov 11, "2011 Rated Summit Decisions") actually shows that fighter pilot production will increase notably in the next few years.

There are new FTUs for both the F-16 and F-15C that are going to open to handle the new wave of students. Crew ratios for the A-10 are increasing and, in his words, "we will singnificantly increase F-22 FTU throughput."

So, the UAV clan hasn't won yet.

What do you mean by that? Your school doesn't have to have an agreement. Go to the nearest AFROTC detachment and talk to the officers there. Regardless if you join, they'll have some of the best info available.

The school I go to doesn't have a AFROTC detachment and in order for me to enroll in 1 at a different school they would have to have some sort of agreement for students to be able to go between schools for classes.

Let me first say I'm not a ROTC guy, and even if I was I'm so old my info would be near useless anyway. Still, you're wasting a good resource if you don't talk to the nearest det. Just for general accession info, but also for possibility of you joining up.

If you join the military you'll need to learn that "you can't do that" often isn't true--you need to ask an expert and if they say no look at the source reg and if that says no figure out the wavier authority and ask them. If you want to know if you can do ROTC, ask ROTC.

I wonder if he has been watching the news regarding the Super Committee lately?

I would love to see increased slots for fighter pilots, just know the policies can just change quickly and the Air Force does not owe you anything.
I know they are a bunch of UAS operators out there that thought "I never signed up for this."
We are facing historic DoD cuts...it will be a bumpy road for all services.
