Where to next?

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on where a C-17 Right Seater might be able to find a civilian job in the Delaware or Western New York area. By the time I start looking I will have approximately 1,000 hours total time,300 of which are PIC and a majority of all Turbine. I have a bachelors degree in Aviation Admin and approximately six years in airline operations.

I am currently Reserves and looking to find something after my initial training is done. Would like to stay in the aviation community but more concerned about a job that does not require me to be away from home and family as much as an airline schedule. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help folks.

So you're not interested in flying commercially? Any built up military educational benefits to go back to school? You could train in a new career while still working the Reserves...

Any aversion to working in the Guard/Reserves full time? Apply to C-17 reserves in the region--Dover, McGuire...how about Stewart Field? Of course, they will prefer IPs not copilots. As you may know already, ARTs are mostly home-bodies, and are great steady employment.

I think you should work ad hard as you can to make AC soon...that makes you more marketable in any case...

Mustang, sounds like being an ART or AGR is perfect for you. There will be tons of openings as people bail for the majors. My squadron has 3 unfilled art positions that they will likely fill with anyone with a pulse... That's not meant to sound mean. It just means nobody wants to be an art

The majors and regionals are the best option for employment and are at the top of my list for prospects. However, Im looking for something that will allow me to be home more.

An ART/AGR slot would be perfect but i dont even want to bring that up in my Squadron because im so new.

I guess im just wondering if there is anything that i am overlooking. Having a family has changed my prrspective on the airlines and so many people have told me its difficult to maintain a good balanace.

Maybe im not being very realistic and will just have to suck up another 4 or 5 years of hard work and flying.

Most regionals have east coast bases near you but would be an insane pay cut. You're better off "bumming" in the c-17 to build time. If that's not putting food on the table you can volunteer for tdys overseas doing no flying stuff but not the best idea since you need to rack up flight time. Pick up the tricare reserve select health care as well, it's better premiums than even most major airlines offer.

The more I think about this option the better I like it. The other option that I am considering (when I have enough hours) would be a fractional jet company. I don't know if the 7 on 8 off lifestyle is better than that of a regional jet pilot put it sure does pay more. I'm hoping that my heavy time might open a door for me.

Suppose you did work for a regional. Can you burn RSV days with Mil time and then pick up open time above guarantee? Anyone done this?

I'm not aware of any regional that allows you to drop Mil while retaining your guarantee on RSV or that would allow a pilot on RSV to pick up on days off above guarantee.

Mil leave almost always drops your guarantee a pro-data amount under most contracts. A line holder will also usually have his guarantee reduced by the amount the dropped trip takes him below guarantee.

Is bumming possible? You'll end up making more money than the regionals.

You should check out Executive Airshare....they have a BUF base. Look up the thread in the Fractional section, it's usually towards the top. Lot's of out and backs so less time away overnight.
