USMC force recon was not part of USSOCOM. SOCOM needed operators badly post-9/11 so force recon became MARSOC, with SOCOM affiliation and funding. This opened up opportunities for some marines.

They should not have named him.
That is BS.
Bravo for the story, but leave him and his family out of it.

A "Joint" unit is comprised of all services. You'd be surprised (really surprised) to see a list of who plays.

(Agreed they shouldn't post names, that is BS)

They would have obtained the operators approval as well as coc approval before outing him. Presumably he's retiring or phasing out of ops.

I would hope so, but my faith in the 'media' in general is quite low after the NY Times issues a few years back.

I have NO love for the 'media' and would not, for one second, think that a reporter would consider (or care about) the ramifications involved in publishing something sensitive. If it generates money, they will use it.

If necessary for opsec and/or personnel security the award and the ceremony would have been classified and the media (hopefully) would have never heard a peep. Trust me those JSOC boys can keep on lid on things when they want to.

Like the riveting video of the SEALs storming the beaches of somalia? I don't think the folks wading in from the surf wanted any part of it, but the political leadership wanted to look tough.

Sometimes they do it to themselves.

"All week the Pentagon had encouraged press coverage of the Marine landing. Reporters were told when the landing would take place, and some television network correspondents were quietly advised where the marines would arrive so that they could set up their cameras."
