FlyBoyd - I didn't know the multi VTs would pick up a former single engine (or even multi-engined tactical fighter guy). Would coming for the T-6 VT help Tummy in the selection process? |

My returning letterman statement was referring to former VT-31/35 IPs. In my 10+ years in TW-4 as an FTS, I can't remember a single engine SELRES breaking into the ME side. There was always a line of ME guys to fill the slots. It's a tough sell to have a guy come and learn ME to then teach ME part time when you've got pilots with years of ME IP experience beng considered on the sample board.
I'm an FTS also, but up at TW-1 and have attended numberous SELRES selection boards...I'll tell you that the Navy/USMC is not going to go fishing for a guy that they have to spend extra time and money to train. No offense, I'm just trying to shoot you straight. The Training Command just doesn't have the time or money to waste. That being said, I think your hours and type flown are just fine to apply to the majors right now and definitely the Regionals. I know the gravy train is rollin in Meridian to Delta, SouthWest and AA...and the guys that are getting picked up are USMC Prolwer, Hornet and Harrier drivers. Get in contact with a bubba tht already works at an airline, have him put in a rec for you, and get ready to get hired. Seriously..... |

Most important... knock out your ATP written ASAP (before Aug and the new rules take over). Once you hit 1500 hrs get your ATP practical done. Yes I know you can get a restricted ATP as a military guy, but why bother since you are talking Summer 2015 and will easily hit 1500 hrs long before that. Have all of your Apps in with Majors and Regionals 6-9 months out at least. START TO NETWORK! 2000 hrs as a Military guy with mostly PIC and plenty of IP time will eventually get you a call from Majors... "eventually" (get those internal Recs... NETWORK). I've heard of guys with 2000 hrs getting calls, but most were 90% fighter time, so if you are waiting for that call from a Major it may take a year or two. If you don't get a call from a Major and can't get a ME full time Guard/Reserve gig you can definitely get on with a Regional. I know some military guys with 1500-2000 hrs who put in Apps with Regionals and got a call within 24 hrs... pick a few of the "good ones" and put in Apps 6 months out; you'll definitely get some calls. Pay will suck, but it will be a mutual benefit for them to get an experienced FO and for you to get 700-800 hrs of ME jet and 121 time in a year while you are waiting to get a call from AA, DAL, UA, SWA. I wouldn't waste $12K on 50 hrs of ME time just yet.
25 hours can be in a sim, which is why a regional will hire him with 25 ME hours...he'll get the other 25 during new-hire sim training. But yes, if nothing else get the written done ASAP...if you blow that off you'll be kicking yourself next summer. |
Concur, get the ATP written complete, and according to the FARs you'll have 24 months to complete the practical without having to deal with all the new requirements. I used the Sheppard Air prep and it worked very well.

And for the love of beer, never, EVER drop out of currency.
Guys with my hours are now getting calls IF they are current. I'm not. (I'm FAA Legal/Current for SE and ME and could get helo recurrent in a weekend, but not the X hours in last 12 months) |

I have a friend that just got hired by AA. 1600TT F-16. I'd get your ATP, apply everywhere and take the first job you get. It seems that express jet will hire you. Take the job, get some experience, and jump ship at your first opportunity.

Tummy, sorry I forgot to mention T-38s as an option too. It is hard to find the guys with fighter time for UPT jobs in 38s. That might be a better option for you since you are current in the T-6. It would be a hard sell to put you in a T-1 as qualified T-6 IP who would just need an AF blue lobotomy to the AETC way of teaching. But, if they needed fighter guys for T-38s, it might be an easy sell. It's centerline thrust, but it is multi.
