Another option to save some cash is look for someone out there looking to do some ME Time Building to split the cost. Just being bored and surfing around on this site I've seen several young civilian types looking to knock out a bunch of ME or MEI time in small twins to build some time to get an ATP. I didn't think about the ME vs SE ATP, but if you could find someone close it could save you a couple thousand bucks. Just type "time building" in the search and it will bring up several threads with guys looking for someone to split costs... just an idea

Correct me if I'm wrong Tummy - but looking at your path - most of that proposed 2,000 hrs will NOT be tactical jets but rather in the training aircraft - specifically T-6s for him.
Looks like he was a student in T-34Cs and T-45s.
Got Harriers (are you fleet Harrier guys getting much time now?) and then went to the training command where he is an IP in the T-6 and is probably flying more than he ever has before (500 hrs in a year maybe you said?)

You are correct.

T-34C: ~100
T-45C: ~170
AV-8B: ~320
T-6B: ~730 (~500 in the last year, estimating ~670 in the next 16 months)

No offense, I'm just trying to shoot you straight. The Training Command just doesn't have the time or money to waste. That being said, I think your hours and type flown are just fine to apply to the majors right now and definitely the Regionals. I know the gravy train is rollin in Meridian to Delta, SouthWest and AA...and the guys that are getting picked up are USMC Prolwer, Hornet and Harrier drivers. Get in contact with a bubba tht already works at an airline, have him put in a rec for you, and get ready to get hired. Seriously.....

No offense taken. I appreciate the honesty.

Will do.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm just going to bite the bullet, pay for the time I need to get the ATP, and apply to everyone including Majors/Regionals/ANG/reserves/etc.

I would not buy ME time other than the time you get while getting your ATP. Several of my Harrier friends had only single engine time and were picked up in the last big hiring cycle. Good luck and thanks for your service!

No go. The rules changed last year, you need an ATP or ATP mins to get hired and that means 50 hours AMEL. You can do up to 25 of that in the sim during new hire training IF the airline will go for that...regionals maybe, but I wouldn't bet on the majors.

lease back

What about buying a cheap (relative term) twin comanche or older 310 and putting it on lease back with the local FBO? You get part maybe most of the cost of the plane covered and sell it off after you get your hours? It's a bit of work to find the right plane for that situation but end reselt might be zero net cost.

I'm a bit hesitant to do that, because I know nothing about buying airplanes. I also know nothing about leasing an airplane to an FBO. I'll start reading up on it to see if it's something I should consider a bit further.
