Default USAR Fixed-Wing Transition

For us active duty rotorheads without a C-12 AQC, what is the best way to get in to a reserve unit and get sent to the FWMEQC?

I have no idea how the Army reserve component manning structure works. How far out from leaving active duty should I be cold calling units or showing up on drill weekends with resumes in-hand?
