I gave Sallie Mae the boot today. I got an 8.25% (fixed rate) home equity loan from my Credit Union.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Does Sallie Mae offer rates which are not variable? I am about to take out a loan for school/living/flight training and was told by a few people to go with Sallie Mae... I guess I will have to look for more from my bank or something..

Based on Clyde101's post, I would say probably not, but I don't know for sure. All I know is they add points to the prime rate based on your credit I assume, but a variable rate scares me. What if that thing goes up to like 14-15% ? That would really stink. I would definitely explore other options.

Everybody says go with sallie mae because they are the biggest and they actually give loans to pilots. but they are expensive, and the customer service sucks. not only that, but you have to use your SS# on EVERYTHING!! you type it into the phone, they make you to fax it, force you to use it as a password, they put it in the mail, everything!! it's ridiculous.

SM very much has a monopoly on career loans. It's a bummer.
