Unwinding the existing debt will be a challenge. I would hope that debtors would sue universities, academic departments, and individual instructors for selling them worthless paper.
To eliminate future problems, simply stop subsidizing student debt at the government level. If a university wants to invest in a student's education let them do so. They can finance their customer's debt just like a car dealership.
This market based scenario would be good for everyone--prices would go down and the poor and the stupid would no longer be saddled with mountainous student loan debt. And tax revenue would no longer be laundered by DOE and funneled through to Big Ed.
