NetJets Commuting Pilot Atl -Phl On US Airway
#12
Last Monday I was commuting on US Airways from Atl to Phl .I was not in uniform. The flight was rerouted to Richmond due to weather .There was a Net Jet pilot on board and I was able to overhear him talking loudly about how low the regional pay level was .He was talking to another airways pilot and another passenger. To me,it is VERY UNPROFESSIONAL to talk about these type of issues when paying passengers can hear you.To most passengers including the one he was talking to dosent know the difference between a mainline ,cargo ,regional or 135 pilot.
It makes us all look bad when this happens and it actually made the passenger feel uncomfortable, thinking safety may be compromised with the low pay ,and thats not the case anymore. In fact several of the most recent aircraft incidents in the US involved mainline carriers. Also the regionals are slowly increasing pay ,offering bonuses and other incentives.
It is not uncommon for a regional fo that knows how to work the system to make $50k and captains easily make $100k.
So for him to berade regional pilots and pay constantly ,and to say these things to paying passengers is totally unprofessional and should not happen again.
You never know who is listening to your conversation, esp when you're talking loudly and discussing pay issues with pilots. I remember him saying he worked at Asa for seven years, never upgraded or never made more than 30k per year.
After listening to him talk I think I see why.
Don't discuss these type of things in front of Or within ear shot of passengers.
Thank You

No ,I have not applied to NJets. In addition, telling all of this to passengers isn't going to solve a thing.Voice the same concerns with the same passion to management and the unions who allowed this to happen. If you think about it ,why take a job knowing what the job pays, then complain to everyone about the pay??You had a choice and you chose to work for that pay grade. Also ,as I heard a passenger comment on this guys conversation in Richmond the other day,if it was so horrible and the pay was so bad why did he work there for 7 years? Dosent make sense. He could have quit at anytime .He kind of made himself sound silly to everyone who could hear him.
Voicing this information to passengers to me is a waste of time and useless and it dosent make you look good or professional at all.Take these concerns to management and your worthless unions.

Some of you don't get it.Is it wrong to try and protect the image of our profession?Maybe its just me but I still have a little pride in what I do ,how I look and what the traveling public thinks about what we do.Telling them some of us makes less than a waffle house manager is just not something I would want to hear if I was a paying passenger,in my opinion .People that work at McDonald's constantly screw up orders because they are underpaid and don't care.Do you want the people who entrusted you with their lives to think the same about us ?

I feel no hesitation to share the facts of low pay, etc with fellow passengers. It does you no good to have them all think you make a ton of money and "only work 8 hours a day". They need to see the price paid by YOU, the labor, so that THEY, the passenger, can fly cheap. Good for him for telling the truth. You should be thanking him.

Dude, the cat has been out of the bag about low pay and bad working conditions at the regionals to the general public for awhile now. Seems like every other week on the nightly news this subject comes up. I fly for a fractional myself and never airline in my uniform anymore because of all the dumb pax questions i used to get while traveling. I always used to hear the pax asking if it was safe to fly on these " small" planes versus the "big real planes" , especially from the once a year non- professional flyers going on vacation.

To your original point, I doubt one "I'm a pilot" tool has any affect on public opinion. I would be more concerned about the douche that says he can "hack" into the airplanes avionics data bus (and control the engines) through the entertainment system router. He is getting national attention and it won't be long before some dirt bag politician (ala Schmucky Schumer) seeking a public concern bans IFE systems and wifi. All based on hysteria and no facts. But I digress....

When you strike for higher wages and QOL improvements, you will be exposing these same issues in a very public manner. If you do strike, maybe that person will be more likely to support your cause since they know the truth. I have had a lot of discussions with passengers about the business, because they ask. When I tell them the offensively low wages of the regionals, they are stunned because they are always told airline pilots are ballers.
But you are right, pilots are responsible for these crap wages. If they are contractual, they are voted on. If they are voted in, then pilots are responsible.

You are the one who doesn't get it... end of story. The traveling public SHOULD be made aware that United Express, Delta Connection is NOT mainline. I worked for two different regional carriers in my career.... yes my choice.... also my choice to leave.... but hiding the realities from the public of these carriers is BS.
Do I think the pay should be more?Of course.Who dosent?
But to berade your fellow pilots for working there and putting food on their table in front of passengers is nonsense to me and unprofessional. The passengers don't care ,they just want to get where they are going.End of story.
Besides most don't understand what a"regional"pilot is anyway. I hope someone out there gets my point and dosent, keep doing this making us ALL look bad.
