Flying Under the HUD
Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at 5:36pm

This photo was taken through the Heads Up Display (HUD) that Southwest Pilots use to find the airport in weather. It repeats all the necessary flight instrument data that the main instruments on the dash depict, all in one easy to find location. The nifty thing about the HUD is it allows SWA Captains to remain focused out in the distance looking for the runway at Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA) on the approach. That is the final time the Pilot can continue the approach. If the runway is not in sight by then, the pilot must execute the “go around? procedure.

The airspeed information is to the left (not in view in this photo), altitude to the right, radar altitude below and to the right of the “DH 150″ notation (this denotes that the “decision height? is 150 feet–the point at which the decision to land or go around must be made) and most importantly, the Flight Path Vector symbol on or near the runway. That is a pretty accurate instantaneous estimate by the HUD computer where the aircraft is flying to, in this case, just to the right of the runway aside the touchdown point. The Flight Path Vector Symbol also shows the airspeed relative to the speed selected by the Pilots for the approach, as well as whether the aircraft is accelerating (gaining energy) or slowing down (losing energy) relative to that selected speed. This is great information to have because it is often your first indication of an upcoming loss of airspeed, as in a windshear event.

The HUD. Another great tool we use to get our passengers where they need to be, safely and securely. (My partner was flying this approach and I was monitoring through the HUD for this picture.) Note the nifty runway identification lights illuminating where the runway starts.

Let me get this straight: Timmeh has been simmering at Commutair this whole time...and now he is going to FedEx???

I have heard some really crazy things in my time..but wow. Just wow.

Really?! You have to go the military section of this forum and look for the thread " a military poser in ALPA magazine"

And if you have a good amount of time, read the original posting over on Base Ops (?) I think it is where the guys actually dug up his info. It has the well deserved title "epic thread".

I would say how odd that would be...going from Eagle (ALPA) to CommutAir (now ALPA) to FedEx (ALPA) after making ALPA look so bad...but it is ALPA...for enough dues they'd let you slander them on the Capitol lawn.

Nobody would miss him here that I know of.

I agree. He made a few mistakes and he's readily admitted that many times. Let the guy turn his life around. What happened, happened. Let's move on.

I feel like the elephant in the room regarding talk about Tim Martins is that you have to know he reads all of this. I'm inclined to agree with the idea that while what he did was inexcusable, it's over now and at some point attempting to railroad the guy's career becomes obsessive. He'll carry it with him forever, as he should, but what's done is done. That being said, he's already established a propensity to both read and post on the internet. For all you know he not only reads this forum but regularly posts as well.

My main preponderance regarding his situation is regarding the facebook notes he made posing as a SWA FO. I don't know about you all, but my facebook is full of people who not only know me, but have known me my whole life, in addition to a large percentage of pilots I either went to college with or worked with at some point. Was his friend list just full of total strangers? Because you have to think that if he had friended even a single person he worked with at Eagle they would have been witness to said notes and been in a position to completely call him out. I know at least about 50 people who would be ready and willing to call bull**** if I decided to start posting about my life as a Southwest FO.

So does this guy meet the criteria of being of good moral character?

That's not something for me to judge. I don't know him very well. If you're talking about the ATP requirement, that's for the FAA to decide.

If you guys want to keep talking about it, pull up the old thread in the Military section or start a new one. Let's get back to the CommutAir discussion.

Are they taking people with less than 900 tt? How is commuting to reserve from Chicago?

There's a high volume of commuters back and forth from Chicago. The good news is that there's a lot of flights. I hear it's not too bad, but I've never tried it. You should be ok, at least there's a lot of options.

coryk 10-02-2011 12:41 PM

Good to hear. Would the consider someone with less total time, but over 100 multi?

Yup. I have not forgotten how he loved to run his mouth about how he would "never go to Colgan." I have called him on this and he refuses to embrace his past by coming clean on his "old feelings."

Luv2Rotate.....we will never forget!!

Commuting to reserve from anywhere sucks. I've never gone through Chicago...I met an Eagle FA who lived in Cleveland and said that commute wasn't too bad. No idea on Newark. I'm sure it's manageable.

On that note...if you live in Chicago, why not Eagle?

Let me correct you... It was a year before I joined them when I bashed them. I went to the interview because friends that were there said things were changing quickly. I talked to the HR folks at the interview and they put it to me straight "What you know of the old Colgan is gone". Ask any old timer at 9L, its night and day difference now. Would I have come here if they had the same practices back when I criticized them? Absolutely not.

Shirley, you don't give up do you? Yes, I am calling you Shirley!
Now let me correct you again. You were bashing Colgan a month before you joined them. Your current post totally contradicts your previous comments to the fullest. I know you are going to deny it but remember aviation is a small world.
I am sure you liked what they had to say at the interview, but the question is, which regional would claim to be lowest paying bottom feeder?
I sincerely hope "Juice" and rest of the Colgan guys read this so that they can have a little soap party with you.

btw, when did you join Colgan(08/2010)? and what what was the date you bashed them(07/2010)?
Do you hold a current medical? Anyways, let me refresh your memory.

Wow... I guess when push comes to shove some people sing a different tune.

I know that when I was a CFI for 3 years nearly everybody I worked with snickered about American Eagle daily. They were all smug in their "decade to upgrade" cliches.

Now...every single one of them calls me DAILY begging for a reference to come to Eagle. Some of them burned bridges with me so badly they ask others to intercede on their behalf.

Very funny how quickly things can change in this industry. That is why I always tell people to keep their mouths shut and just focus on your goals.

All actions have consequences. SlowATR is just reminding our new friend, Luv2Rotate, this universal truth.

Remember this?......

"They go there knowing its **** poor pay but think its a great stepping stone. Then 3yrs later they're still being paid **** poorly and complain about how bad the industry has become... Well here's an FYI for all you bottom feeder carrier wanna be's. You're the problem not the solution. "

....one month later he was at Colgan. Zero credibility!

Okay, you got me... BTW, we're not the lowest paid. Actually we're one of the better paid now :). So, it all works out.

Now ATR/Juice, while you're on APC, I'll continue fornicating the local hotties.

No you don't, no such thing as a good regional contract. We don't have one at Skywest either. Everyone is underpaid, just some more than others. Are you really happy with your compensation?

Good point. We're just less underpaid compared to most.
