Fastest Way to a Radial
#41
I just can't afford to work for what they pay new guys... but the DC3/4/6 would be fun. For now, I'll have fun with Jr. (Wasp Jr, that is!)
Nice to see so many pilots into the sound of round. Wish I could find a way to make a living at it!

I was blessed to have caught the last gasp of round engine flying in the lower 48 , from 87-99,my Ernie Gann/ St.EX fueled dreams were realized, flying DC3s and Convair 340s out of Michigan,Ohio, and Pa.to everywhere imaginable from the frozen north to the Sierra Madre, it was hard, beautiful work, and it has been completely taken over by turbine powered ships. I think Catalina flying Boats out of LGB , is still running some round engined 3s, I think the museums and preservation societies are your best bet in CONUS, but the radials are making a last stand in AK, and the Carib, where everything from DC7s to C46s are still earning a living, God bless them !

I was a Lockheed P2V-5 & -7 Crw Chief for an airtanker operator, and have an SIC type in the plane. Thae Forest Service has tried to do away with radial engined airplanes, but they're just too hard to beat, and they don't have anything to replace them anyway.
BTW, the radial engine parts are not difficult to acquire, R-3350's anyway. We had a much harder time tracking down Westinghouse J-34 Turbojet parts. Big radials are fun.
Here's another thread which we discussed them: http://www.airlinepilotforums.com/ha...vs-piston.html

We had a DC4 at IFL out of PTK till '96,that was one beautiful airplane, our fleet in early '96 was 7 DC-3s,2 CV340s, the DC-4 ,with the first of the CV580s showing on the property, it was round engine heaven while it lasted.

I flew the -3 for a very short time and then the CV 440 for a few years. Got a little -6 time but got furloughed out of training. I vowed I'd never go back to round motors but that was sure fun while it lasted.

check them out here The Collings Foundation - Preserving Living Aviation History for Future Generations and let me know what you'd be interested in. It most definately is NOT a full time gig, and for that matter, they have a bunch of guys across the country that do it for free for the fun of flying a part of history. The few full time guys that travel the entire show circut get paid fairly well.
