Amflight

Does anyone know the current "upgrade time" from the PA31 to the BE99 at Ameriflight? Everthing ive read and heard was about 5-6 months. Is that still accurate now that no airline is hiring right now? Also, approximately how long would it take to get PHX or an outstation for PHX? Thanks.

The trend I've seen is that those PHX BE99 oustations usually come up for bid in early summer (bet you can't guess why). If you got a job in the chieftain within the next couple months, my speculation is that next summer in the 99 (PHX outstationed) could be very realistic.

Hard to put a timetable on anything else, where there isn't a whole lot of movement in the company at the moment.

FA10Matt 07-22-2008 06:35 PM

I'd say the days of 5-6 month upgrade are LONG gone for the time being.

Ziggy 07-22-2008 07:19 PM

Although Ameriflight is an excellent company. If you're flexible I would look at other places too. Right now I believe Cape Air is hiring 402 cpts if you meet the mins. Also they give bonus's is you move between the Caribbean and New England. On another note, if you dead set on Ameriflight I would go ahead and make the just as a chieftan cpt. It's good time building in a 135 company, and you build seniority.
I would make the decision soon because I would think slots would fill up with furloughed 121 pilots. Ameriflight would be a good company to hunker down in during this hard period.

oaklandflyer 07-28-2008 10:24 PM

Upgrade time at Ameriflight depends a great deal on your base and whether or not you are willing to accept an outstation. At my base, we have PA31 pilots who have been waiting a year for a BE99 slot. Some bases, like Phoenix, are all turbine. In that case, your initial training would be in a BE99.

beech1980 07-29-2008 01:01 AM

I am phx based, I know we have a flagstaff and nogales outstations up for grabs. As far as getting hired being based in phoenix, not gonna happen for a while, not much movement with the current state of this business.

skatergeek 07-29-2008 02:11 PM

well I am almost to 135 mins (about another week, 2 at the most), and will be applying once I get them. Right now I am willing to take what I can get, but I would like to be back in PHX someday. Actually a FLG outstation would not be bad at all. How often do they hire direct in the 99?

kgairborn 07-29-2008 08:20 PM

You should look into becoming a training captain @ AMF...
get your foot in the door and be on top of the new opening. You'll fly a lot if your a training captain @ BUR

beech1980 07-29-2008 09:15 PM

thats what you would be hired into if you took a phoenix outstation (flg, ols). word to the wise try to interview with the acp in phoenix, or they will try to stick you in burbank, oakland, or portland flying the piston. make it known to the hr in burbank that you want an outstation out of phoenix.

What exactly is a 'training captain'?

Pilot89p 07-30-2008 04:41 PM

I went from PA31 flyer to E120 capt in a year and half. Them days are long gone. Altho if your willing to move around it works out very, very well. I still think they are looking for people to head to CVG.

Hound 08-11-2008 09:26 PM

A training captain at AMF is sort of like an LCA at other carriers. Initial operating experience, line checks (135 equivalent) and eventually designee status. Pretty good deal if you are marking time waiting for the industry to get out of the doldrums.

BTW, AMF training catains also do some graound and sim training.

Ok, I have just recently put my application in and if I get hired, I would more than likely go to OAK. So my question is, what are the runs out of OAK like? I live in PHX so I will be commuting every week and I just want to know how much time I would be able to spend at "home".

socal swede 08-14-2008 05:53 PM

figure on leaving for home sat morn and back sun nite since work week is mon am - fri pm

TangoBar 08-15-2008 10:33 PM

Commuting in that fashion seems to be bad juju- I've seen people just burn out from trying to run things that way.

Don't do it. Just move. Commuting on a 5 on/2 off schedule is just awful. I love where I live but I'm moving to my next job because commuting is just so bad.

Red Forman 08-20-2008 09:32 PM

Anyone here work for Ameriflight and based in DFW? What planes are based there and how do you like it? I live in Dallas and am sick and tired of my current job and am tired of commuting! I am really looking for a change in pace.

DFW has PA31's, outstation's are F05, PPA, and OKC, they one (1) BE99 as a reserve in DFW as well as one or two Metro's. The Bro's (Brasilias) are technically outstationed at Midland, Lubbock, and Amarillo and overnight in DFW. If you want time this is the place to go. A lot of double trips from UPS out there and you can easily build 1,000 hrs in a year.

Red Forman 08-21-2008 11:10 AM

So if I am based in Dallas I will only be on the PA31, or I could also be on a BE99, Metro, or Brasilia? I am not sure I understand, and thank you for your time.

The PA31's, Brasilias, and some Metros are outstationed and overnight in Dallas. The rest are Dallas based and I believe are reserve lines.

skatergeek 08-21-2008 05:12 PM

Is ameriflight still hiring? I heard a rumor that they stopped and this past class was the last one for a while.

Red Forman 08-21-2008 08:37 PM

I live in Dallas, so can I be outstationed in Dallas so I can be home during the day and just gone during the nights during the week? Thanks again.

TangoBar 08-25-2008 12:16 AM

Not likely. Runs go out in the morning, come back at night, unless there's some oddball sked with the Bros. And from what I hear, there's not much forecast for hiring for them for a while.

As for the equipment, I don't know if they're hiring street captains for the Metros right now, possibly for the 99s. The next question is whether there are any openings at DFW at all.

Skatergeek: As far as I know, hiring is continuing. I know OAK and PDX are still hungry for PA31 pilots- PDX is just barely staffed, and OAK is about the same right now.

skatergeek 09-02-2008 04:39 PM

Hmm...I put my stuff in about a month ago and still havent heard anything.. Does anyone know how long it takes to get a call?

HyPoXiKDeViL08 09-08-2008 07:36 PM

they're not hiring anytime soon just like everywhere else cuh. just enjoy the benefits, days off, and captain's pay @ MPD my friend! free wednesday lunches!!!

skatergeek 09-08-2008 08:45 PM

Haha they just need to get better food. Why does it say CRJ FO? You only wish.

own nav 09-09-2008 03:45 PM

Even when things are going good, just submiting your application is not enough. As with anywhere I suppose, it's helpful to put a face to a name, let them know you're interested.

If they're not hiring right now, well, there's not much anyone can do about it, but you might just be first in line when they do start hiring again.

Right now we are doing interviews, but all applicants are being put into the pool.

i talked to the hiring lady a few days ago and she said they weren't hiring for oak, but for an open base and that you would find out during ground school

I wouldn't count OAK out. PDX is probably on the list, and I imagine BUR can use one or two.

There are so many pilots in BUR/ONT right now, unless we lose 5 people overnight we won't be hiring for awhile.

skatergeek 09-15-2008 03:52 PM

Their ad is back on climbto350 for OAK and PDX...

Not even to put the little tabs in the hundreds of miniature binders??

diamnd15 09-17-2008 12:17 PM

having a interview set up within the next week for oak

StrackAttack 10-01-2008 07:46 PM

Any idea what it would take to become a training captain in either bur or ont?

No training captains out of ONT, only BUR. If you have less than 1,200 TT then they will want to see around 500TT bare minimum.

aviator4hire 10-02-2008 04:31 PM

I've thought about Amflight before, but wasn't sure if I should apply since slots are getting hard to come by. I've got 135.243 mins and would like to apply, but do I have a chance? I'm based in Florida and would be willing to move.

Wingman97 10-02-2008 04:52 PM

Well just saw on climbto350 that they are looking for people.

skatergeek 10-02-2008 05:21 PM

I saw that ad too. It says "Open Domicile"...Is that going to be a new domicile or does that mean the pilot can choose?

freightdog 10-03-2008 09:05 AM

From what I understand it means the pilot can choose upon interviewing by giving a list of desirable bases.
