Default Recurrent Training Contracts

My employer has decided that all of the pilots, about 10 of us, need to sign a contract that obligates us to repay over 12 months the cost of recurrent training. We are a 135 operation. Does anyone know what is normal, if anything, in the industry? We have individual meetings about this on the 27th of March

It's not normal. In fact I'd say it's darned rare. Start looking for another job...

F*ck 'em. This is not a retention device. The point of this exercise is that they KNOW that nobody is going to pass up a better job because of a training contract, therefore they view this as an opportunity to get a chunk of cash out of EVERYONE when they leave. On average, each departing pilot will pay 50% (6 months worth) of the cost of recurrent. They are basically forcing YOU to pay for the training of your own replacement when you leave...what utter horsesh*t!

If you want to stay, you should be able to refuse to sign the contract, such contracts cannot normally be retroactively forced on existing employees. Check with a lawyer if you want to stay.

Oh yeah! It goes on. The company is double-dipping. They charge a management fee to the owner who has his or her plane on certificate. That fee usually includes the training costs for crews. Don't do it.

Thanks for y'alls feedback. We had a pilot's meeting and the owner decided to chuck the whole thing, so no contracts now.
