Ag flyers have the same issues.
Ag flying is very different, but the biggest danger faced when spraying a field is falling asleep. Back and forth. Back and forth. Ad infinitum.

Pipeline survey or powerline checks aren't what I'd consider dangerous or risky flying in any sense of the word, unless someone decides to hot dog and make it a risk . It's just not.

Any low/slow flying is inherently risky. It's about how you manage the risk and your skills/awareness, but denying that it's riskier than other types of more routine flying is simply denying human factors.

I've done both, and many years ago. There are definite and possible dangers to any sort of flying, though anything below 500' seems to present an additional set of dangers. I never felt like falling asleep with the Ag flying; in my case that was more probable on a night freight run/ backside of the clock stuff or on a long cross country. Just my experience...

I've felt like falling asleep many days on pipeline patrol. After you get to know the lines and know where most of the work is being done, it gets boring. Bring an Ipod or Ipad :P

Most jobs get boring. Years ago I saw a sign in a marine supply store. They turn out to be common, and should have an aviation version... "Sailing is hours of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror!"

I bought a nice little hand held Garmin 560 touch screen for WX and paid the extra $10 a month for xm radio. Totally worth it. I spent so many hours playin around with that thing. It was an expensive thing...not unlike a girlfriend to me.

Boy I miss it.

Old "Ruby" was my companion. And she saved my butt a few times on that job.
