Colonel William Glen “Doc” Doody M.D., 86, passed away among family at the Mary Health of the Sick nursing facility in Newbury Park, California, on Thursday, January 18, 2018, after suffering a stroke in late-November. Bill was born on August 4, 1931, in Waynesburg, PA, the youngest of four boys (Joe, Richard, Robert and William) born to Joseph and Mayme Shock Doody. He spoke very fondly of his years on the family farm, relating stories like the times he and his brothers would use their pockets as holsters for salt and pepper shakers as they seasoned tomatoes to eat right off the vine. An athlete in the wrestling ring and on the football field, what he lacked in stature he more than made up for in work ethic and spirit. Bill entered the U.S. Airforce Cadet Program and received his commission and pilot rating in December 1953. A hero of two wars, he first served as Aircraft Commander in B-26 and B-57 aircraft during the Korean War. He would later serve as the Senior Medical Officer and Flight Surgeon with U.S.A.F. Tanker Task Force in Desert Storm before being promoted to the rank of Colonel in May 1991. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1995 as a Colonel with 22 years of service. Bill left the Air Force in 1959 to complete his education, receiving a Bachelor Degree from Waynesburg College in 1960 and MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1964. He was very fond of his ties to the University of Pittsburgh, remaining a fan of and advocate for the school’s athletic and educational programs. In May 1986 Bill married the love of his life, Helen Louise, in Newbury Park, CA. While their union was cut tragically short, his love for her endured and was evident to all who knew him. He was happily remarried to Virginia Kerr Doody and later Carol Maxine Fulton Doody. After operating Family Practices in Idaho and Westlake Village for over 20 years, Dr. Doody changed his practice in 1989 to focus on Aviation Medicine. Adored by his patients and staff alike, he was a practicing doctor up until suffering the stroke. Even though he was no longer able to fly himself, he dedicated the ultimate years of his career to ensuring that fellow pilots could continue to do what they loved. Doc was a loving father and grandfather who took great pride in and derived much pleasure from the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He was their greatest advocate, supporter and fan. Despite enduring several personal tragedies, Doc was a source of positivity, strength and good humor to the great many who knew and revered him. Dr. Doody was a pillar of the community in Westlake Village, serving as the youth football team physician at Agoura High School for 15 years, among other community endeavors. One could scarcely accompany him anywhere without encountering several people whose lives he had impacted, always for the better. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him. The Colonel’s passing was preceded by one child, William Doody Jr., and three wives. He is survived by three children, Jami Doody Cantor, Michael Doody and Ryan Doody; spouse, Carol Maxine Doody; five grandchildren; and several step-children, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at St. Jude’s Church in Westlake Village on Friday, January 26th at 1:30 PM. Flowers may be sent directly to St. Jude’s Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to the Disabled American Veterans organization (dav.org).

I second for Dr Edward Shore. He’s an old Navy flight surgeon and cool as heck. His office is like an encyclopedia of Southern California aviation. Pay him cash and you’ll be buds!
