Default Dirty Money

This is so gross it's not funny. I'm going to give all my money away!

From KING5:

SEATTLE - If you can't seem to shake the flu this year and don't know why, your wallet or an ATM machine may be to blame.

The Swiss National Influenza Research Center found cashiers and others who work with cash are more vulnerable to the virus.

"We know obviously that when someone coughs, they cover their mouth with their hand, and as they touch other things like a door knob or dollar bill, the flu virus is going to be one that object for a period of time," said Dr. Marc Tribble, infectious disease specialist.

Until now, medical experts only thought the flu was transmitted through the air. Now there's proof the virus survives on paper.

"I thought it was interesting one of the varieties of flu they tested in the study could survive for three days on a dollar bill – which is much longer than what we would have expected," Tribble said.

Tribble says hand-washing is the best defense.

"Whether its pieces of paper you're passing around in the office or dollar bills at the bank, you've got to be aware that sick people may be passing around the virus," he said.

He said bank tellers and cashiers don't need wear gloves or protective masks; a bottle of hand sanitizer should do the trick.
