this condition occcurs in many as they age. If it is incidental and there are no others signs such as edema, abnormal heart rate it should not be disqualifying. If you failed your medical because of it, you should have received a letter outlining steps, tests, etc to get it back.

I am afraid it is a disqualifying disease. I have it and lost my medical. I have been denied for a 3rd class medical. The only reason it was detected was because of EKG, no other symptoms. I lost medical solely on the diagnosis of HCM. Due to HCM I now have a defibrillator, ICD. That is also disqualifying.
I am trying again to get a 3rd class and it is currently under review at FAA office in DC.

I was advised by ALPA medical that this issue has been fought in court and the pilot lost. Unfortunately this set precedence and I was advised to not fight it unless I was ready to spend a lot of money on lawyers. Even then no guarantee.

Even though you might not have any HCM symptoms, take this disease seriously. Unfortunately most HCM diagnosis come post mortem (sp).

Good luck

Do you have an update? Were you ever able to get a third class medical? I have a friend dealing with it right now unfortunately, she has been denied and we are currently asking for reconsideration.
