Default Celiac Disease/Gluten Allergy

Anybody else out there dealing with this?

I've been enjoying the fat loss of no carbs but recently read a few articles genetically linking Type I diabetes to celiac disease I already need a new lunch bag, mine it just too small to pack 4 days worth of GF food.

Any advice or tips are appreciated.

Grab Elizabeth hasselbecks book on the G free diet. I don't have celiac, but several sensitivities along with gluten. Ive delt with it for YEARS and docs couldn't figure it out. All sorts of procedures that gave no answers until I went the homeopath way and 3 grand later, ive got answers. The more G free condiments u bring in ur food bad the better! Gives u more options

CAtoUTJC83, I tried to send you a private message and I couldn't, I believe it is due to low post count.

I have Celiac as well and I am about to except a recall back to the airline industry since getting diagnosed. I would like to learn how you handle this while on your trips. Have you found safe locations inside the terminals? Have you ever gotten cross contaminated while working? I am going to select this thread to watch so hopefully I will get the reply.

slammer1906, sorry to read about what you are going through. I can completely relate, I thought I was loosing my mind before they narrowed it down. Although I am not happy I have celiac, but I am thankful I know what it is. Now I just have to deal with it on the road and I am back to feeling nervous.

NoWake,

Sorry I don't get on here much and I lurk, guilty. My AME said it was no problem because there is not any actual treatment except eating healthy. No medical action required.

I did run into a thread on APC about how lame it is to carry a gigantic lunch box/cooler bag, but I guess that makes me lame. A while back I got the strongbag cooler.
StrongBags - Flight Crew Luggage: Glacier Flight Crew Luggage Cooler - Coolers & Duffles - Products

I plan. I start a day or two before a trip and make a few extra servings of the meals we eat as a family and I'll freeze them. I can fit about a 4 day's worth of food in the cooler. My goal is to eat no food outside that bag. It works well. over a year and a half an no contamination issues.

Airport food all depends on your airport. Where I'm based, there are plenty of options, I'm just to cheap to go there and to be quite honest, the food tastes horrible. Homemade food is the best.

Hope I get my post count high enough to PM.

Oh, and gluten free isn't so bad really. Everyone gets all sad when I say I can't eat my Doubletree cookie but they would hate me going up the elevator if I ate it. There are plenty of alternatives to the foods we used to eat. I found that portion perception is the first thing to change when going GF. Double the protein, triple the veg, drop any cola (caramel coloring comes from barley in most cases-->subtle gotcha) lose most dairy and easy on the grains, voila, a more balanced diet.

CAtoUTJC83, thank you for the reply and link. I will take a look at that cooler, there is also the one from Luggage Works that is about the same size. I'll take lame over sick any day. One thing I am going to have to learn as well is how to commute on top of eating away from home.

There is a website/app called "find me gluten free" that so far hasn't steered me wrong.

Find Gluten Free Restaurants | Find Me Gluten Free

There is nothing wrong with eating healthy, I am all for it. The only things that are giving me anxiety are the thoughts of long reserve stretches and quick turns. I will sure miss the convenience of just grabbing that pizza or sandwich.

As for the post count... surely there is some discussion you can chime in with.

There are a few Apps such as Yelp which help in the search as well.

It takes time and research to find places to eat in each city. Of the foods you can bring with you fairly easily is GF bread. I actually like my JFK layovers because there is great GF bread in a nearby grocery. Grocery stores and their Deli's are good places to find food. If you are contact sensitive the deli might be problematic though. With the GF bread bring or buy whatever you know is safe.

It has taken some getting used to the new routine but it is very doable. Bring food but look around the hotel area and research it on you off time. The food you bring you will have more confidence in though. That said I find that since I have many layovers figured out I eat out most meals now. Convenient but probably not a healthy.

D,

So very true. Yelp helped me find my favorite spot in AUS. Come to think of it, Yelp and Urban Spoon are my go to apps when the bag runs empty.

Breakfasts are some of the most difficult meals. I found that I had an intolerance to oats as well. It's been a year since my last bowl of oatmeal and ready to give it a try.

It's funny, most of my crew members are excited for good restaurants and bars. I get excited for a solid grocery, whole foods or better yet, Trader Joe's.

Good luck out there.
