Hi Everyone! I am a new member of the forum but have been using you guys as a resource for years, and it has been a huge help. I have a medical question for you guys I figured I'd ask before I consult a specialized AME. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
My friend just graduated college with a bachelors, and is considering pursuing his dream career of flying for the airlines. He is concerned about some medical stuff, however.
A year or so AFTER he received a third class medical, he was put on an SSRI (not one of the approved 4) for several years for minor anxiety. During this time, he continued with his flight training and received his PPL (per advice from people at the airport, he didn't report the SSRI use to the FAA ). He is no longer taking the SSRI, and wants to pursue his career as an airline pilot.
I guess my question is, is this even a possibility at this point? Will the FAA/airline dig and wonder why he continued with his training and did not report this?
One more twist... when he first applied for a third class medical, he was denied due to being prescribed Adderall to help with focus in high school. He immediately stopped taking the adderall, and 2 years, many days of psychological tests, and many letters to the FAA later, he was issued the 3rd class medical he applied for. Would the fact that he was once denied medical clearance lead the FAA or airline employers to dig deeper into his records and find that he was on an SSRI when he got his PPL?
I realize that he should have grounded himself and reported the SSRI to the FAA, but as they say, the past is the past... What would you guys recommend to this young fella?
