Airline-Specific Medical Hiring Standards
#21
AWAC just required the First Class and they do the DOT golden flow after the interview if you are offered the job.
As a side question...I am 43 and am going broke trying to keep my First Class renewed every six months while making peanuts waiting for the big guys to call. Of course I can fly as a FO for my current airline on a Second Class. Anyone have any thoughts on the criticality of keeping my First Class up to date for major and legacy apps? Anyone get an interview invite with a lapsed First Class?

OK, thanks rickair777. I called the nearest AME and he is checking his appointment calendar to see when he can get me in.

This will be a permanent thread to share info about exactly what various airlines do in the way of medical screening. Please create a new post for the airline you work for, or recently interviewed at.
Does your airline just take look at your 1C? Do they perform an in-house "Astronaut Physical"? Something in-between? How do they feel at about Special Issuance medicals?
If there's an exam which is more involved than the FAA 1C exam, what all is included? Blood cholesterol, Height/weight standards, BMI, etc?
Also please post recent info, things have changed in the last 15 years. If you see incorrect info in a previous post (things do change) please post an update and mention the post # with the bad info and we'll delete it.

A couple of the top tier will actually still conduct their own in-house exam as part of the interview process, but that is only to verify you meet FAA 1C standards... so a few folks who patronize "pilot friendly" AME's might struggle there but for most of us it's a non-event.
Not sure about SI's... they have to honor those if you're already employed but don't know how they deal with that for a job applicant.
Also... a few airlines do a psych eval or personality inventory. See the relevant airline forums for info on that, plenty of discussion there.

I have a first-class medical with a restriction that inhibits me from flying solo at night. It specifically states, "Not valid for night flying or by color signal control." I took the SODA test and had no issues with looking at the sectional chart and the color signals. We went out onto the apron and I got 8/10 colors correctly and was rushed to answer the last 2 even though I couldn't see them clearly due to the sun and glare being in my eyes. All in all, I failed the SODA but am still wondering if I can still fly for an airline. A friend of mine told me smaller carriers like Republic and Piedmont are still hiring people with this on their medical because there is of course another pilot next to you and they need pilots desperately. I am hoping to find out if I can still fly or not for the airlines with this on my medical. Thank you.

I think there are two doctors nationwide who still have the equipment.
Rushed at the moment, but do a quick search for AMAS, and give them a call. Seventy five bucks.
I don't work for them.
