Default Medical question

I currently have a 3rd Class medical and I am on medication for Hypertension. I am thinking of getting my CFI. Would being on that medication cause a problem getting the 2nd or 1st Class Medical?
Is anyone else on medication for Hypertension that has a 2nd or 1st Class?

Thanks,
Joey

I believe you only need a 3rd class medical to work as a CFI.

You are absolutely correct. You only need the 3rd class to flight instruct, even for hire. Catch is technically if someone wants you to ferry an aircraft etc....you are for hire, but not as a CFI, which needs a 2nd class. Good stuff, fly legal with someone trying to kill you, but not while you're alone!

This is not entirely correct. A CFI does not need any medical at all to instruct. The limitation is that without the medical, he cannot act as PIC, so the student must be rated and current in the aircraft and type of operation (night, IFR). Such a CFI can do these things:

BFR's
Instrument training (Hood/VFR only)
IPC (Hood/VFR only unless the pilot is still current)
Area/Route Fam flights
Aircraft Check-outs (non type rating)

You can probably get a 2nd or 1st, depending on severity. Get some professional advice BEFORE you apply to your AME.

These guys have good info on their website, and also do the kind of consulting you might need:

No problem getting a 1st class medical on Hypertension drugs.

You just got to bring a note from your doctor once a year with dosage of drugs, any side effects, 3 BP readings, and if you have any complications like Renal Failure or Heart Disease. Also if on a diuretic a blood test of Potasium and Creatine levels is required once a year to.

I was blessed with great family genetics, everyone on my dads side has been on BP meds. I'm 25, 5'8" and weight around 155 (this is down from 190), the doctor foudn that my BP was high last summer. The doctor tells me some people just have it and that is jsut life.
