Default RTP bonus and training cost

OK. Would like to participate in the RTP however I have zero fixed wing time. I live near SkyWarrior in Pensacola so housing cost not a factor.

Does the RTP bonus basically cover just the ratings and checkrides? Am I going to have to pay for 250 hours PIC airplane time out of pocket?

You should read the forums and literally hundreds of post directed towards this. Or the website made by the company with several POC listed for more exact questions.

Yeah, I’ve read damn near every one of those posts but haven’t found anything about how the training gets paid for, especially when starting from zero. I’ll call SkyWarrior tomorrow.

The only thing you would pay out of pocket would be the examiner fee for the checkride and any costs over $23k. If you’re military and have the GI Bill then you can use that to pay the additional costs.

Just did this without GI Bill. You are looking at around $30,000 of cost if you are going to pay for all the flight time in addition to what you would get with $23,000 from an RTP program.

Made more sense for me to save the GI Bill for the daughter’s college. Cash flowed it over 16 months before retiring.

In the grand scheme it is less than a stripper Camaro SS or a Mustang GT.

Your experience may vary based on rental fees in your area.

Don’t forget things like iPad, Foreflight, Subscription, oral guides, FAA manuals if you want paper, headset, mount for iPad, club fees, FAA Class 1 medical fee, airline apps, aviationinterviews.com fee, etc.

Thanks Army

Yeah, I was sadly mistaken that the bonus would cover everything. 30K additional is a definite show stopper for me. I’ve been out of the Army since 1997 with zero G.I. Bill etc.

That explains why there’s such a shortage of pilots. Who would be able to spend that kind of money for a job that pays WalMart wages?

Oh well, back to helicopters it is. Fly safe all.

I think PSA will also let you draw from your signing bonus to cover the additional costs.

I would suggest at least sending an email to those who run the program. Yes there’s a lot of info out on here but you might have to sift through a bunch of “maybe’s” and “I think’s”. I’d say one email and if it comes up the same as you’ve seen here then you know for sure you’ve made the right decision. Don’t want a case of the “I wish’s” down the road.

This, 100%.

At my interview they did a cost sheet for me based on the flight time and ratings I needed. I didn't need any certificates, only time. PSA covered 100% of my bill, minus housing.

Also consider your probable pay and position in 5 years, 10, at retirement, and lifetime earnings. RW jobs have higher starting pay, but the top end is a lot lower. In this market, the investment in airplanes will pay off within a few years.
