How can you say that a near miss would be a hit?? thats like saying "I nearly won the lottery", and your considering that a win?

That makes zero sense to me. A near miss is a near miss...as in you missed it. you didn't hit anything. Near mid-air and near miss are synonymous, except that near miss could also pertain to ground incidents.

"I nearly missed hitting that light pole with my wingtip." See what I mean?...you didnt hit anything...it was a near miss.

I think the train of thought on this is, a NEAR MISS is a hit because if you nearly miss someone that means you almost missed them, as in you hit them....

think of it this way, driving in town, your driver says to you "i nearly missed that turn" did he miss the turn or actually make the turn, he made it.

so if you nearly miss someone in the air, that would mean you hit them, but almost missed them...

yup, makes sense. I was just walking and that same conclusion came to me...except I was thinking along the lines of like...hitting a pole with your car. If you missed the pole, you would say "I nearly hit that pole". And I guess if you hit the hole, you would say "I nearly missed that pole".

Lol, except when I say "I nearly missed that pole", it sounds to me as though I missed the pole...but just barely.

Who knows...guess there's better things to use my thinking on.

Ok, I still think a near miss is a miss...it was just a close one.

For example, if a plane passes overhead at 500ft, and you didnt see them...that was a miss. Let's say the plane passes overhead at 50ft...that would be a NEAR miss. It really is in the way you say it...because if you phrase it differently, it sounds like they could hit ya... "The plane missed me" (he didn't hit you), or "The plane nearly missed me" (He almost missed you, but hit you instead.

However...if it relates to...darts for example.

If your dart hits the outside of the dart board...you missed the bullseye. But you hit just outside the bullseye, you nearly missed the bullseye....yet you didn't hit it.

On final at an uncontrolled field about to cross the numbers...when i see this shadow come over the cockpit. I look up and there was a company arrow doing a power off 180 right on top of us! So close i could see the damn hydraulic lines in the wheel well. Thank god he was too high to hit his point!
