How about flashlights. You guys carry your own LED for night time preflights, or does the aircraft typically have one?

Youll drink bottles from the airplane, which you will find spots for its storage.
Company will probably have you carry your own although there are flightlights onboard you probly wont be allowed to routinely use

The airplane flashlights are emergency only. Find one you like, get a bigger one that's VERY bright. Smaller flashlight = smaller battery so you'll replace them often if it's bright. I tried LED (too dim) but went back to halogen. Maybe LEDs are brighter now.

Bright is important, if you miss something on the RON walkaround and the flight cancels the next morning it's all on you. The FO in the morning may be able to see much better due to the sun being up.

LED flashlights are great. Small, light, and batteries last long time. Get a brand name (company with a website) greater then 300 lumens. Though 150+lumens is doable

Don't forget the duct tape for emergency repairs.

Don't worry, hydration will stop being your #1 priority real quick. Especially once you figure out having to go number one during a flight is not real fun.

This flashlight has been great for me on the road. Super bright 900 lumens, USB rechargeable. I only have to charge it about once or twice per month depending on how much night flying I'm doing. $25 from a decent brand.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KH2JP5G...v_ov_lig_dp_it

Also, a travel sized power-strip/surge protector is handy as well. I don't bring any of the charging bricks for my mobile devices and just plug them all straight into my power strip along with a couple 6' USB cables for adequate reach from the bed/night stand.

I've been using this one: https://www.amazon.com/JOTO-Protecto...to+power+strip It works great after I opened it up and re-soldered a loose wire. Been using it for about 2 years.

Flew with a captain a few weeks ago that had a battery pack with a solar panel on it. I since got one and just lay it up on the dash. I end a five leg day with EFB, phone and battery all at 100%

Will you post a link to the battery pack with a solar panel?

Heres the one I bought. I start a trip with utnfully charged, plug in my iPad and phone then site the battery up on the dash. As long as I start with then full it does a pretty good job of keeping up. The solar cells will keep it charged up as long as it doesnt drain for a long time.

Nice battery but that is pretty much what it is. That tiny solar panel would take a week to charge it up from <50%.;

Not always, it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some are mandatory as emergency only, but in some cases 1 or 2 on board simply be extra equipment in which case they could be used.
All depends on what's in your company books

TOMM 08-03-2018 07:28 AM

This thing sitting in direct sunlight on the glareshield for any length of time looks ripe for a lithium battery fire due to overheating, especially if the battery has any defects from manufacturing.

Strong Bags Cooler

Just took delivery of a new Strong Bags flight crew cooler. Man does this thing rock! Definitely worth the money. Design and engineering, clearly by a pilot. Awesome recommendation. Look forward to using it on the road.

Stealth Air 22" bag

Crap. The Stealth Air 22" Pilot Rolling Bag with Side pockets....just arrived. My laptop does not fit in the laptop pocket. It is about 2" too short. I have a standard 14" dispaly on my laptop. Meaursing the pocket, it barely holds a 12" laptop (Depth). It also has a smaller tablet pocket, but this does me no good. I am thinking of sending this one back and getting a bag that will hold a standard laptop. Anyone have a different crew bag recommendation that would hold a laptop with a width of 14 1/4"??

You'll know several minutes ahead of the other guy if the cowl anti-ice will be required.

I wouldn't keep a laptop in there, even if it fits. There's not enough protection in that pocket to keep a laptop safe from a fall off a jetbridge or the weight of 15 other valet bags on top of it.

AZFlyer 08-03-2018 07:58 PM

Aerocoast has some good crew bags.

Taco280AI 08-03-2018 09:40 PM

I'm still a newb so appreciate some of these suggestions. From my, very limited, experience and talking to the senior guys I'd definitely only have two bags total, especially if commuting or deadheading. Anything more is just a hassle.

How about Apps - what are you guys using (if anything) to check crew schedules, flight loads, weather briefings, company communication, Uber or Lyft for crews? etc. Stuff that doesn't burn through your battery!

apps are kind of specific on you and your company. I use a schedule app (RosterBuster, or Fc view), APDL for logging, flight stats for gates and commuting, MyRadar, Uber, and an app for company email.

I thought the same thing for a long time but have recently added a cooler bag and can’t believe I waited so long. Life is easier, healthier and cheaper by bringing your own food. Having the third bag while commuting isn’t anymore difficult either.

You need to keep that bag and put the laptop in the main compartment where it has protection.

quoted again for more emphasis. The only thing I put in the laptop pocket on my bag is my hat. It makes a great hat cover.

Good advice, your laptop is sure to get broken in that external compartment. If you must bring a laptop (very few people do anymore) use a laptop sleeve type protector, tuck it inside and lay some clothes over it.

Strong Bags Cooler swap

Good advice on the laptop not going in the 22" crew bag. Makes sense, not sure what I was thinking. My alternative path at this point is to return the Strongbags Canadian Cooler and exchange it for a Strongbags The Summit instead.
http://www.strongbags.com/products/the-summit.html
The Summit offers a larger interior that allows for laptop storage plus a self contained cooler inside. That way I stay with 2 total bags and solve the problem while keeping the 22" Luggageworks Stealth.

I have a 2nd job that requires a laptop, you know, the one that pays $125k/yr in addition to this flying for fun thing.

Yeah, I carry one for the other gig too, you can't do real work on tablets or phones.

Blackhawk 08-06-2018 05:15 AM

Only things I haven't seen that I carry.
1. Extra roll of ACARs printer paper.
2. Extra reading glasses since I have to wear them now.
3. Sewing kit with extra pin locks.
4. Shout wipes.
5. Spare power cables for electronics such as phone.

I understand the usefulness of using it and think it's silly that the FAA puts such a large barrier in the way of our getting useful safety-related information. But I don't think he said "...don't use it", but "...don't get caught using it". Using unauthorized electronic devices either on a line check or with an FAA jump seater is a good way to get a blemish on your record. Unfortunately, some have gotten so used to using electronic devices in flight that they forget about this in those scenarios. There have been cases of FO's being terminated from legacy carriers for using cell phones in flight and I've heard of some using them with FAA jump seaters. I actually had an FO pull out his cell phone and connect to Wi-Fi during a line check. I had to tell him to turn it off or I would have been in violation of the OM. His debrief lasted a little longer than mine and behind a closed door.

Top of my head:

Two LED flashlights with rechargeable batteries.
One smaller one that I carry in my pocket on the flightdeck and a slightly larger one for the preflight.
Basic medicine kit in case I accidentally stab myslef or I get the runs. Aspirine and cough drops.
Wipes & sanitizer.
Two iPads, one company one private.
Chargers and cables.
About a gazillion pens and rubber bands and bits and pieces.
Spare reading glasses.
My cool shades and some cheapass shades.
I carry all of that in separate zip lock bags so it doesn’t migrate allover the place.
And I carry hot sauce.
Till the security chick took it.
Now I’m out of hot sauce.
For the love of Hades try and got everything in a roller bag and cockpit bag.
Don’t be the guy hauling three bags around. You’re not an FA.

If you want to be strict in your interpretation? Yes.

If you have a line check or the FAA on board, I'd advise being strict in your interpretation.

Other than that, do what you want, but keep in mind if you post on social media a picture CLEARLY from the flight deck of a commercial airliner, you're documenting your violation of a regulation.

Just a thought. It's your career, you risk it however you like.
