Default Have you graduated high school yet?

I'm 23, and don't believe I look any older or younger. When in uniform, I try to present myself neat and professionally. However, I'd say once every couple of weeks, someone looks at me and says, "Are you sure you're old enough to be flying this plane?" For those of you who get the same question, what are your favorite replies? Here are two of mine.

"Oh yeah, its ok. My permission slip is in my flight kit w/my moms signature."

If the captain is with me, i'll look at him/her and say "Oh, its take your kid to work day."

What wise ones do you have?

I get comments about it all the time. The other day I heard an elderly lady say "Look at that flight crew. They all look like they are in high school."

Walking into a hotel the other night, an older lady in a big group of intoxicated people said "You look so young! You can't be over 18." My response, "I'm younger than that!! I just turned 16 and they let me fly a plane!!!! Cool huh?" After about ten seconds they realized that I was joking and I told them that I was 27, just cursed with a youthful appearance.

I've always looked young, although my receding hairline is taking care of that now. When meeting one of the "choice" captains at my last airline, after sticking out my hand and introducing myself, Captain Personality scrunched up his nose and said, "What are you, 12? Do your parents know you're out here doing this?" He didn't say it in a joking way, either. So I just said, "Sure, who do you think drove me to the airport this morning?"

OK, well, that's what I *should* have said.

Luckily I'm pretty tall so most think I'm older than I am. Then they have this strange look on their face when they find out the truth.

I told a guy in the Dunkin Donuts line at DCA that my mom had signed a permission slip for me to be a pilot so it was okay.

I think he saw through my sarcasm and said he didn't mean anything by it and that he thought it was great I was so driven that I could get hired at a young age. He said "That's really cool" about a half dozen times.

I too am 23 and don't even blink at the (old) folks that comment at my youthful appearance anymore. I normally just tell them I'd be flying C-130s in Afghanistan right now if my eyes had cooperated and they stand down.

A: Nope, but I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico!
