Mesa and its staffing problems

Mesa's staffing problems continue. Good to see.
Taken from mesahub.com : On Wednesday in O'Hare alot of flights were delayed for 3 to 4 hours and then canceled. There was good weather all across the eastern seaboard. I believe the delays were crew availability or the lack there of. Maybe the 30 to 40 people predicted on this board last week quit all at the same time.
At least 6 CX's in LAS, mostly for crews.
Day flights leaving hours late if not CX'ed.
Fatigue calls in PHX.
"Vacation Flu" seems to be catching on.
Rampant JRA's and REA's.
From wat I coud tell. At least 5 flights cx last nigh in CLT because of no CA. MSY has cancled 2 nights in a row. And this is only the first week in NOV. we are f#$%^ed.

As I was going to my plane the other day in ORD all the passengers at the gate erupted in cheer because they thought we were the Mesa crew they had apparently been waiting for. When we pushed back the Mesa airplane was still parked with no one there but a flight attendant waiting outside. And they were scheduled out before us. I suspect the bottom line is what's ultimately important to United, but I wonder how long they're going to put up with this.
UAL recognizes this, that is why they made the move recently to eliminate some of the turbo-prop flying that SkyWest perfroms in order to replace it with CRJ 700 jet service. (22 jets). These jets are another signal that UAL is removing MESA from the equation.

Good maybe then, AWAC can get some flying back....3/4 of the pilot group would love to go back to the midwest

Some more recent insight on Mesa's future plans taken from mesahub.com -
I betcha OJ is finalizing his grand divesture plan as we speak of breaking MAG up in true Lorenzo style.
First dump all the CRJ 200's on china. Than lease out the more valuable 700 and 900's when attrition levels consistently overwhelm the training department. I don't think you'll see united or airways shed too many tears at MAG's voluntary fleet reduction.
A few months ago I laughed my arse off when he told his wall street cronies MAG could easily become an aircraft leasing company within a few years. Now, I would say those plans will probably happen much faster than anyone thought, including Ornstein.

Ornstein: Mesa growing despite potential labor shortage
...Mesa's service agreement with Delta Air Lines was amended to include 14 new CRJ900s for Delta Connection...
...most likely at Cincinnati or Atlanta.
It also expects to launch its Chinese joint venture with Shenzhen Airlines by September with a CRJ200... Some current Mesa pilots will head to China to fly for the new airline "There is not a glut..."
...Most are sick of the abuse, only eight days off a month and unstable future...

As you pointed out, the airline is not growing. We have lost the D-8 and replaced those aircraft with the 900NG:
"MAG notified Mesa CRJ Pilots that all vacations are being cancelled through the end of the year. As justification for these cancellations, MAG cited aggressive hiring by major airlines and expansion at MAG in the form of the 76-seat aircraft coming online for Delta beginning in November. They also reference the MEC’s rejection of the PBS Testing LOA last Spring. Let me be absolutely clear: Over five hundred pilots have resigned from MAG since January 1, 2007. MAG has experienced a NET loss of some three hundred pilots since the beginning of 2007. [[of course, the numbers of lateral moves has been missed here- more than HALF!!!]] In addition, scores of pilots are set to “time out” in the next few weeks. The training backlog has forced postponement of new hire classes. The vacations are being cancelled due to inadequate staffing. Period. Read the Pilot Working Agreement, Section 7.H for yourself. The company correspondence alludes to “unforecast expansion” as the contractual justification for cancellation of vacations. Expansion? There has been no expansion on the Mesa CRJ. Fifty seat jets have been replaced with larger jets, with an overall REDUCTION in the fleet. While MAG cites the Next Generation CRJ 76-seat aircraft coming on for Delta, they fail to note the Delta Dash-8’s which were eliminated. They also allude to shrinkage in the Air Midwest system (I HATE SHRINKAGE). Several CRJ aircraft were taken out of service and sent to China, with the company publicly stating more will follow."
#2. ATL is closing and CVG never happened.
#3. The China ops is having a heck of a time finding pilots, and the Chinese have said "no-go" until future planes are staffed with 5 crews each.
#4. Glut? how about "expendible"??? I wish I could find the quote...
#5. "The MEC has received numerous calls in recent days concerning pilots contacted by Crew Tracking and being given a Junior Available assignment which brings them below their contractual minimum days off for the bid period (ten for a lineholder, eight for a Reserve)."
Resolution has been found for most of these so far... got 1 1/2 months left in this year so we'll see!!!
