IOE starts tomorrow morning

I'll be out there in the airplane for the first time tomorrow. Any words of advice? Maybe ought to get a block altitude btw FL270 and FL370? Just kidding. But seriously, any advice that could be offered would be great.

JoeyMeatballs 04-17-2007 03:28 PM

Ask Questions, and don't worry, IOE is proof that its possible for an ERJ, to be flown by one pilot, hahah just kidding, enjoy it. Bring the Check Airmen Coffee, and tell him you went to ATP so he doesnt have to worry:rolleyes: Good luck.

On the Radio start everything with "and ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" delay it for as long as possible

cyrcadian 04-17-2007 04:07 PM

Don't screw up.

ghilis101 04-17-2007 04:07 PM

every time you mess up just say "they didnt teach us that in the sim" ...then hell just give you a startled look and badmouth the training department. works like a charm

JetJock16 04-17-2007 04:30 PM

DON'T ARGUE WITH THE CA, just do it his way. You'll learn over time that each CA does things a little different and you just have to adapt. Some want the AP on immediately and some don't care. Some are straight SOP and some are far from. Best advice is to ALWAYS stay straight SOP, it will help you on your PC and you can't get in trouble for following the book.

What kind of TOOL CA wants the A/P on immediately?

Amazing enough I had a CA on the Bro that wanted the AP in at 600'. He briefed me before we took off that he wants the AP on at 600 regardless of how good I was at flying the a/c. He said that it's company policy for a reason. I then explained to him that 600 is the min ALT for AP to be engaged and not the max ALT for hand flying, he did know this but was trying to pull the wool over my eyes. I then asked him how pilots are going to gain experience hand flying that a/c (great a/c to hand fly BTW) seeing that a day might come when both AP's are deferred. We battle on the topic for a few flights and wouldn't you know it, the next day we received a bird with the CA AP deferred and on that very leg my AP craped out with 5 legs to go. He tried like hell to get another airplane but could not. He was a lazy jacka$$ nearing the end of his career. For those flying the Bro in FAT his initials are GA, so BEWARE he’s a TOOL!

saab2000 04-17-2007 05:28 PM

Sounds like someone who couldn't fly anyway..... A/P is a useful tool, to be sure, and I use it a lot, but handflying once in a while is nice too!!!

My old (and maybe future company.......) had a limitation on the A/P of 50 feet! Cat 3.

Anyway, back to the point!

-Follow your profiles
-Be humble - ready and enthusiastic to learn
-If you get confused, go back to the checklists, flows and profiles you were trained. That training is there for a reason.
-Never be arrogant. Ever. But especially in the beginning.
-Be polite to all ground personnel.
-Fly visual approaches conservatively, more like an ILS. You can 'chop and drop' later.
-LIGHTEN UP!!! HAVE FUN! THIS IS WHY YOU DID ALL THAT CRAP IN THE CESSNA, ISN'T IT?!?!?! :D

Man most of the time my IOE captain WOULDN'T let me use the AP below 10,000'...

cyrcadian 04-17-2007 06:30 PM

One leg on my IOE was to hand fly the entire way. I assumed it was one of the required items for us to do. Either way it was a great experience. Maybe not for the pax!

how far/long was the leg?

flynavyj 04-17-2007 06:39 PM

yeh, i was told to "fly" the airplane as much as possible while on IOE, helps you get a feel for the real plane. the sim is good, but there are motions and feelings it can't simulate, so, you'll get a better feel in the plane. It's also nice to have as much feeling of the plane before you land it too, as you'll need to get a good feel for how much you need to move the yoke to get the desired pitch for the flare. So, the autopilot on approaches all the way down the glideslope will become a thing of the past.

Oh yeh, don't forget to say "clear right" a lot, have fun giving the passenger briefings during cruise (just say what you mean, and don't say things like "nipples, she's hot, or, did you see the fat lady in 3c" and remember what my IOE checkairman said as i flew that first approach..."good luck, we're all counting on you." :D

Not far, maybe 25-30 min enroute.

The previous post about the AP being inop is true, it will happen one day.

1. Don't wear your tshirt that says "iflyjets4food" When I did this in 94 at COEX the IAH CP wanted me to take it off because through my sweat in August under a white shirt, the pax could read it while I did the walkarounds.
2. Never pass up the opportunity to take a leak when you have 30 seconds.
3. If a pax comes up and tries to tell you that the carburetor is making funny noises on the engine (turboprop only), Let the Capt speak. Don't do as I did on IOE and start to make a stupid comment that "Actually, it is a turb..." when the Capt cut me off and politely thanked the man for confirming his fears that it was either the carburetor or possibly the timing chain, but it would be looked at thanks to his attention to the matter. Same if they say the muffler is making odd noises "in the beginning of the flight" on jets.
4. Drink some water during the day so you can do 2. above
5. Have fun!

TonyWilliams 04-17-2007 08:12 PM

I've been hand flying (I'm on IOE also) up to about 18k or so. Company limt is min 600 ft to max 20k on departure.

The corollary to this is to always attempt to make your CA laugh while he's talking to the pax.

i find it helps also out of courtesy to the other pilot. Just the other day we did a dtw to lan turn, 22 min in the jet. Things are really busy in those 22 minutes and it helps the non fly (and the pilot flying) out a lot. For example we took off, i was flying, called for ap on at 600, he called departure, and then i took the radios so he could prepare for the approach into lan,, get atis, set up fms, call the station, etc. etc...

i guess what i am trying to say is that yeah,, i love to hand fly the plane to 28999, but some times it is prudent to get the ap on a little sooner to help facilitate all the other things going on.

22 min? Sounds about like GSP-CLT, PHL-ABE, BWI-PHL or any of the other super-short routes we do. On short legs you're a-holes and elbows up there but its not *that* time critical...

Depending on your experience, you're likely to have the CKA tell you stuff you already know. That's fine, smile and nod and remember he's working toward the lowest common denominator. Mine told me on arriving at the gate "Congratulations you just flew a jet!" but I said "Hey thanks but I flew a Beechjet before I got here."

bizzum 04-18-2007 06:59 AM

The only 3 things you need to know....

1. "clear right"

2. "I'll take the tuna."

3. "I'll take the fat one."

KiloAlpha 04-18-2007 07:49 AM

I thought #2 was always, "You're right."

CL65driver 04-18-2007 08:07 AM

Don't kick in the wrong rudder in 40 knot crosswind landings. :D

Remember to have fun on the overnights, if you have time.

Hand fly it as much as possible!!!! When I did IOE, my Capt. made me hand fly the entire leg from EWR to BTV. Hand fly all your approaches, you'll thank yourself later when Jorge the AP takes a dump on your way to CLE during a blizzard.

Haha, I agree. Blame it on the those damn guys who try and teach us how to fly the airplane they have never flown before.

Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down, works every time.

iflyjets4food 04-18-2007 11:39 AM

Well, day 1 is done. It was a great time. It wasn't near as hard as I expected. I definitely didn't know A WHOLE TON OF STUFF! We never did the passenger briefings in the sim. We never had to deal with ramp control in the sim. There's all this stuff that you never see in the sim, and when I sat down for the first time, I was kinda lost. After the first leg I started to get the hang of things. I'm hoping tomorrow I can get through some legs where the captain doesn't have to prompt me to do things other than calling for checklists. Can't wait to strap in and do it again!

JoeyMeatballs 04-18-2007 11:41 AM

nice, congrats, try to sleep with your F/A, thats how real pilots kick off IOE, unless of course hes a man.................well unless you like that kinda thing:rolleyes:

I guess he'll be asking more than once if he can serve the 'c.ock'pit:D

iflyjets4food 04-18-2007 03:15 PM

Not interested in sleeping with F/As. I'm a happily married man, and I get PLENTY of that when I'm home.
