I don't know the educational backgrounds of the two crewmembers on that flight (do you?) But, I'd like to suggest, as an ERAU aero studies grad, that a world history grad can make as good of an airline pilot as a Riddle aero studies grad. Not sure of your background, but I've personally seen first hand that what your degree is in doesn't really matter.

I understand exactly what you are saying. I mean no disrespect to the pilots of that specific flight. I know, for a fact, that they were fine individuals and under those circumstances we all might have made the same mistake. My point is that one of the things that makes us good pilots today is that we tend to focus on using hindsight to our advantage (CRM, SA) in training.

You are exactly right, I am undereducated in the traditional sense (and my degree doesn't matter) but the training we receive is much more specific in nature. In my opinion, this is definitely increasing the overall safety record. While we are underpaid, I think we still make a pretty good bunch of pilots. In other words, had I only been armed with that degree, low time might be more of an issue.

I should not have been so specific but it pains me that we get painted as sub quality so often. I simply don't think that's an accurate assessment.

All education is good, but I think we are doing better. It isn't 100% necessary to be a post grad to be a good stick.

couldn't agree more. I'm not so sure that you need a 4 year degree to drive a truck with wings. :confused:

Good point . . . force them into career that they can't leave since they wouldn't have skills. Starting to sound like a socialist/communist society.

Maybe we should all be scared at what is happening here in the US. Could you image the promoter of World Democracy turning into a Socialist/Communist society? You laugh, but look at the going-ons in our Federal Government.

my dad flew without incident for united from 59-94, with no degree. i fly with capt's at brown with no degree, always thought it was overrated.

my top picks at the time, AWAC, XJT, and RAH, wouldnt even give me an interview. i no longer work at SKW. I am critical about the place but they did run a good operation, i just think too many skw employees are brainwashed.

My father also flew without incident/accident from 52-90, also with no degree. He rose through the ranks at Braniff and finished his career with AA after BA finally folded.
