Hey Donnie is that you???
|
Got on with 743/106. I'll be at the Hilton.
|
I'm thinking of doing the ComAir route. Keep us posted on how your training is going, please! :)
|
I'm in the May 21st class as well. Looks like I'll be driving in on the 19th and they sent me info for the Turfway Hilton.

Im at the Holiday Inn, if you guys have an outdoor pool I will be frequenting at the Hilton.....the wx is so nice here and our pool is inside...Id love to lay out and study! |
I'm at the Hilton. No outdoor pool, but yeah the wx has been amazing. I'm just getting ready for the sims later this week. Ground school has been really good though. Awesome instructors.
|
Question... The packet says to bring "Aviation Weather" AC00-6A, amongst others. Is that necessary the first day?
P.S. I know of a good pool :) |
Darn, none of the comair hotels have an outdoor pool.......Guess I will have to find a park if I want to sit outside and study!

They give you everything in class you need to study. If there was anything else you wanted to bring ya could, but none of the books they said to bring we ever used. And I just finished ground school last week.
|
Don't even bother bringing the Aviation Weather or your FAR books. You won't need them! They were suppose to update that 'Welcome' letter a long time ago. On the other hand, bring a headset, 'cause you might need it later during Sim training. Also, if you have Jepp binders I'd recommend to bring them as well, 'cause Comair will only supply you with the plates.

My whole class brought the FAR and weather books. We never once looked at them. Everything was in the materials they give.
Good advice about the headset and jep binders. |
Hotel Room Occupancy
Does Comair set you up with a roomate while your in training?

How long into training do you find out your base?
Also, what are the breaks like? How often/long? Just trying to get a feel for when/if I'll get a chance to visit home. Thanks!! |

That's what I've figured but I also heard some recent classes had a couple go to CVG. Thanks
|
Everyone wants to go to CVG and let me tell you this. Go to JF'nK and fly your butt off, or go to CVG and sit on your butt. Yes JF'nK is not an easy place to live but it is not the horrible place everyone thinks it is. You don't need a car, its easy to get around on the LIRR or the Subway and the city is great. The crews at JF'nK are great and fun to work with as well.
|
As for days off you will have plenty, During sims I had at one point 10 days in a row off. Training is great hope for the Radisson it is not as nice as the others but it is within walking distance to a lot of things to do. Keep a good attitude and ask questions, the training dept. is there to help.
|
Yes, JFK is the most junior base, and yes you will go there first. However, CVG is VERY understaffed. I'm JFK based and I keep getting CVG overnights. It seems to me that the transfers back to CVG from JFK aren't keeping up with the people leaving the company who are CVG bases.
BTW.. You all will love it here!! Everyone is great though training and once you get out online everyone is awesome to fly with! |
btw... i'm not sure what they are telling you all for reserve time at JFK, but i've been off IOE for a month and I have a line next month

Unless you are comming from CVG the commute is great. And like Pantera said, NYC is a great city. Plus it is all about the cash money. You WILL make more flying out of the Circle jfK. |

During the first week and a half you will have some time off, their whole launch thing puts u in the sim and they split the class up. it seems like you are kind of floating around cincinnati until launch is over. you have no books, so nothing to really study, so its actually kind of boring on your days off til ground school starts..... |
Good Afternoon,
Would someone explain how they live in NYC on that hefty first year pay. Not being sarcastic, but want to plan ahead. Thanks for the help. V/R, Apollo |

V/R, Apollo Dont live in Manhattan, and if you are in the heart of NYC sell you car. Places like Brooklyn, Queens, are not that expensive and there are nice areas. I am commuting from Philadelphia. I thought about moving to North Jersey or NYC, but the drive is not that bad and I can get a place 10 times nicer for the price in philly, and I am from there..a 2 hour drive is not a bad commute compared to what some people do (aka flying across the country to go to work) I know people who commute from philly and areas of equal distance and it is not bad. considaring reserve is not very long, it will be even easier to commute. |

Some people have been getting MCO after staying in JFK for a few months, but you will be on reserve for a very long time. You can hold a line in JFK fairly soon, and commuting from Florida to JFK is pretty easy. You have a lot of options!
Thanks for the quick response. NYC is expensive just thinking about it. Are crash pads hard to find, etc. V/R, Apollo |

Of course NYC is expensive, but not everywhere. I'd say most crashpads are between $200-$300/month. You won't be on reserve at JFK very long, and once you hold a line your commute will be a lot easier as well, and you could almost stay at a hotel if you needed to stay for a night. Check out some of the crashpad sites on the net. You might also find some stuff on Craigslist, but usually the bulletin boards in the crew rooms have listings.
Thanks |
I love it here at Comair. Good people, good trips, and overall a great experience.

You fly out of Newburgh? V/R, Apollo |
oh you can't live in NYC you need to live somewhere else. Heck the pay almost doesn't cover my car payment. But you get a crash pad and stay there for 250$ a month and between your crashpad and the hilton/sheraton you only have a couple nights where you have to stay at the homeless shelter or sleep in your car at the employee lot. Heck makes you look forward to going back to work just so you have a shower!

My checkride is about a week away. I found a place in Kew Gardens to stay. I'm just going to flat out live in a private room for $450 I found off Craigslist. I'm from DFW and really don't feel like commuting that so I'd rather be right there where all the action is. If you can't find it in New York, it doesn't exsist! Can't wait to start flying.
