ATTENTION ALL AMERICAN EAGLE PILOTS:
RE: FLIGHT 4539/20 JUNE YYZ-BOS FLIGHT 4539 ENCOUNTERED SOME DIFFICULTIES TODAY DURING THEIR INITIAL LANDING ATTEMPT. THE CREW ELECTED TO GO-AROUND AND LANDED SUCESSFULLY ON THEIR SECOND ATTEMPT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS STOPPED ON THE RUNWAY AND ALL PAX AND CREW MEMBERS DEPLANED WITHOUT ANY INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT DID SUSTAIN SOME DAMAGE TO THE FLAPS AND BELLY PANEL. WE ARE INVESTIGATING THE EVENT, IN COOPERATION WITH ALL AUTHORITIES, AND WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED AS WE KNOW MORE. THANKS FOR YOUR PROFESSIONALISM, AND FLY SAFE JIM WINKLEY ... ATTENTION ALL AMERICAN EAGLE PILOTS RE: UPDATE ON YYZ-BOS FLIGHT I WOULD LIKE TO PROVIDE AN UPDATE ON THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS REGARDING THE INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED WITH ONE OF OUR FLIGHTS IN BOSTON. AS MANY ARE PROBABLY AWARE, FOOTAGE IS AVAILABLE DEPICTICTING THE AIRCRAFT CONTACTING THE GROUND WITH THE LANDING GEAR RETRACTED. A TEAM COMPRISED OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM AE, EMBRAER, THE NTSB AND THE FAA HAVE CONDUCTED TESTS ON THE AIRCRAFT TO DETERMINE IF ANY MECHANICAL DISCREPANCIES COULD BE FOUND. INITIAL RESULTS INDICATE A POSSIBLE FAILURE OF A LANDING GEAR COMPONENT THAT MAY HAVE GIVEN FALSE INDICATIONS TO THE PILOTS THAT THE LANDING GEAR WAS DOWN AND LOCKED PRIOR TO LANDING. AN IMMEDIATE GO AROUND MUST BE INITIATED, AND THE EMERG/ABNORM PROCEDURE LG/ LEVER DISAGREE MUST BE FOLLOWED. ... While Eagle can't say what the problem was until the NTSB makes a determination, it seems plausable to presume from these messages that it was mechanical, and not a crew issue. Yeah, they are currently "working with Embraer" on some possible causes/remedies I believe is what the email said........

I've been flying the aircraft for nine months so I might not know that much about it. In the video, the nose landing gear door is open but the nlg remains retracted. If the crew were to forget to put the landing gear lever down and then remember at the last second and then place the gear lever down, then the nlg would have tried to extend and that would have been obvious in the video. What the video showed is the nlg door open and the nlg retracted.
The EMB landing gear lever is only an electrical switch. The switch is either up or down. With no malfunctions, the nose landing gear doors won't open unless the landing gear lever was placed in the down position. I've read in a different thread ("Eagle Gear Problems") on this forum that the problem was replicated while the aircraft was on jacks. This is unconfirmed though. |

This subject needs to be beaten some more because when airlines have to replace crews because neither pilot has 50 hrs. in the airplane, something bad will happen eventually. Are you fighting this subject so harshly because you are one of them in the right seat of an RJ having to deal with all the ****ed off captains that don't want to teach you how to talk on the radio?

There was no info. at all posted about this incident being mechanical or not previous to my last post. It seems now to be absolutely mechanical and the pilots should be applauded for the way they handled the incident. How many of us would have been alert enough to go around when expecting nothing bad was happening and end the flight with very minimal damage to the A/C? My apologies to any of you out there that think I was accusing the crew of pilot error, I wasn't.
*All i'm saying is that a few of these very inexperienced pilots being hired at regionals everywhere will show up on the news very soon!* |

RobThree, you might not want to post confidential e-mails we receive about company business. Especially those e-mails which have a manager's name and content about an ongoing incident investigation. The general public is not privy to this info and can only be viewed by logging on to SABRE.

I had the opportunity to meet the FO (flying pilot) of this erj last weekend during NIFA. Great guy!…great story amazing job!!!
