ERJ 145...headset recommendation
I'm glad to say I'll be starting training in the E145 for CHQ next month. I got a bit ahead of myself and bought a passive jet-type headset a few months ago (plantronics MS260)...I figure if I don't use it in this airplane, maybe I'll use it on another type down the road. From what I've heard the E145 is pretty noisy...is it common to wear the standard GA-type headsets on board? My old CFI headset may see a few more years of use:)
|
Most people use the DC's and I have never seen anybody wear anything other than the over-ear type. The cockpit is noisier than other jets, but more quiet than any GA twin I ever flew.
|
Just use the DCs that they provide in the airplanes. You'll want to save weight in your flight kit for all the charts you'll have to carry for places like Seattle, Pasco, San Francisco, San Diego, Cuba, and other places you'll never go.

I use the sennheiser HMEC - 25 stereo. Awesome headset, much smaller than a DC... Great ANR. Only downside is the batteries need to be replaced once per 4 day. I mitigated the expense by just buying a set of rechargables. I keep 4 sets with me @ all times.... Just to be safe. If the batteries crap out, you still get okay reduction with just the passive over the ear setup... Plus they are small enough to fit inside of my flight kit, without doing anything funny. Check them out, they are pretty nice...
|
I use BOSE, and they are GREAT.... With 2 AA batteries I fly for 4 days Approx.. 24 hrs of battery life with the noise canceling turned ON... It's just GREAT, I highly recommend BOSE....:D

i don't know how some of you guys use the same headset, why not wear the same underwear?
|
Telex 5x5 Pro III's with custom earmolds are very comfortable on long days.
|
Telex Airmen 850, or 750's: noise canceling, no stupid batteries, very light and most importantly, doesn't mess up the hair........

I just use the ones in the airplane as do most guys I've flown with. I've only known a handful that actually bought their own. The ones they provide are nice. Isn't very loud up there. We can take them off and talk no problem. I just put earplugs in under them and within 10 seconds forget I'm even wearing any. They give you sterile wipes to clean everything with.

Hey thanks...hopefully I'll see some of you on the line in a few months.
|
Telex 5x5 with the custom earmolds...you won't even know you're wearing anything!
|
the ones that have the power pack on the belt and...you can wear a ball cap with them that matches the shirt of the company (usually a big M or BK or Wendy's) and when you it the push to talk it connects to the outside screen with all the food on it....

Has anyone tried the new DC X11? |
I use the Telex 5x5 with custom ear molds. No headband, no big ear cups or pieces. Comfortable, featherweight, and you can wear a hat and sunglasses with big bands and no problems. It takes up about as much room in your kitbag as a granola bar.
I ordered the whole setup from this company: www.averysound.com If you call Avery Sound, ask for John Meyer. He knows how to set up the headset for the (LOUD) Emb 135-145's from getting feedback from other pilots. Im not plugging the company... im just passing on a good advice that I got from other pilots. |

Eagle provides wipes onboard the aircraft. I use these to clean the headset prior to using them. Some of them are pretty well used.

I use the Telex 750 with earplugs, works great, and really cheap. Plus you dont get a headache from wearing the community DC's. You can get a set of 750's used on ebay for probably $75. Fits great in the flight case.

I just put 7600 in the transponder, put on my goggles and leather cap, and off we go....

i tried using my telex 5x5 on a flight and the background noise was awful, do you know how to fix that?
(during cruise at high speed when the noise is the greatest): Take a normal headset or a company David Clark and plug in the headphone jack only. Wear the David Clark headset and plug in your Telex 5x5 into the mic jack only. Turn hot pic on. You should hear the god-aweful HHSSSSSHHHHH sound. Take a mini eye glass screw driver and on the side of the Telex 5x5 headset adjust the mic gain until the noise is fairly low (if you have never done this you will have a little black tape dot covering the hole with the adjustment screw). It is an ULTRA SENSITIVE adjustment and if you turn it down too low you wont be able to hear your voice. After the noise is about right put the mic under your lip and test out the mic volume to see if you can hear yourself (with the David Clark) headset on. Fine tune it until you find a good volume of yourself and the cockpit noise is tolerable. You wont be able to make all the noise go away but you can make it much quieter. (damn those loud EMBs!!!) One more thing to keep in mind with the Telex 5x5... your voice will be the greatest volume and the cockpit noise will be the lowest if you position the boom mic right underneath your bottom lip touching your skin. The noise is a little louder and your voice will be quieter if you wear the boom mic right over your mouth like a David Clark boom mic. Good luck!!! |

P.S. If anyone does have a quieter cockpit, the MS200 is now for auction on Ebay. |

The Telex 850's are great with fantastic noise cancelling (no batteries needed,) and there sound quality is top notch, but they are little pricy (you can get them off EBay for around $350). I have the 850's and I'm about to sell them seeing I'm going back to the EMB as CA so I need something for loud T-Props, that's why I just bought the Bose Quite Comfort/UFLYMIKE setup (cost you between $450 and $500). I absolutely love them, they work great with IPods when flying and they double as headsets when commuting or deadheading. In my mind they're well worth the money. |
as everyone else said the 145 is a noisy little toy, think it has a little to do with it's an EMB-120 cockpit, that is now going 320 KIAS above 10k, however, i haven't noticed it (except some birds that were louder than others) being overly loud in cruise at FL370, low teens and going fast however, oh yeh, you'll go deaf.

I have those sensitive ear plug headsets. I hate being above 250 KIAS! TOO LOUD!! |
well we're getting a little off topic. we know its loud and when its loud. are there any recommendations on headsets other than the traditional clamp-ons? im really over those! telex 850 is a little pricey, but i have a feeling im gonna have to suck it up and go that steep to be happy.

They're in MINT condition and I'll include a $35 Ipod y-connector. |
I used a Bose headset in the 145 and never turned the ANR on. They worked just fine and were more comfortable then the company provide DC's. The one trip I had to work without my own headset was torture. Any headset that covers your ears should be fine. Yea, it's loud in the 145...for a jet. Compared to any GA aircraft it's quiet. Just find something you're comfortable with and go.
|
yeah, i used the clamp-ons for about a year in there, and can't take those things anymore. i need something lighter. i sent you a pm jetjock16.
|
Right now I have my Telex Echelon 100s. They cost about $140 back in 2002 when I got them and in my honest opinion they are better, no, WAY BETTER than the DC X11 that I wasted a month trying. Man, that thing was a massive joke.
Now I'm saving up for the Zulu...someday! |

Ditto. They provide alcohol whipes that you use on them every time you get in so odds are they are cleaner than your own headsets.

I haven't been sick in years. I don't think it's being too trusting as much as not being a germ freak. All of these flu shots, wiping everything down, etc. and it seems like those people are the ones getting sick. I'll whipe the headsets and if I remember to whipe the yoke then great if not who cares.
