Hotel boredom?
Seriously- what do y’all do in a hotel all day. Other than read, work out, or watch tv. I’m talking about the hotels that don’t have anything nearby to explore.

I hate longer overnights and try to avoid them. That said, if the normal eat sleep workout shower routine is not enough of a time killer, find ways to connect with family at home.
|
I carried a gaming laptop with me so had no problem wasting time on the road. Most hotels had good enough internet, if not I could tether my phone and get a decent connection.
|
Online side hustle.
Oh and one can kill a lot of time trolling APC :-P |

Sometimes the weather gets in the way. Then it’s time to catch-up on some Netflix. |
But seriously, he’s right.

Really? Think about all the pilots in the 80s and 90s who didn’t have internet or any way to stream content. Somehow they found a way. It’s literally the best time to be a human in world history in regards to ways to not be bored.

With Uber you can really do a lot. When I was a corporate guy I would seek out local air museums. Been to almost all the best ones. Of course, some people in the airlines want nothing to do with airplanes…
How about learning a foreign language? |

Considering it’s the regional section. We better stick to public transit. Truthfully though, I ride the bus or train. Dirt cheap, and I enjoy the adventure. |

Exactly, if you can't find ways to keep yourself entertained in this day and age then you have problems. Like those long airport sits, I have my earpods in listening to music or watching my ipad. Some people just state into space, or worse yet want to talk to you for the whole 4 hour sit. It's like dude, I like you but I don't want to spend 10 hours talking to you today between flying and sitting. Find someway to keep yourself entertained.

I like to talk. I like to sit and stare into space. I like to play games. I like to read. I like to people watch. I like to watch movies. I like to watch TV shows. I like to walk around. I like to watch airplanes. I like to do puzzles. I like to read things on the internet.

Prison simulator. You're locked up but lucked out and didn't get a cellmate. Maybe it was good behavior or you bribed the guard. Quick! Use the coffee up before the guard finds it since it's contraband. Now you're going to be assigned to work detail the next day so rest up as the van will leave with or without you and you don't want to suffer the consequences of missing it. Eventually you'll get released to go home before having to report back since the judge won't grant you full freedom until your 65th birthday.

Go get the big towels. |

I do things like this quite a bit. A lot of hiking (Mailbox peak SEA/ Cactus to clouds PSP) or general exploring. Walk everywhere usually 15-20k steps a day getting to/from coffee and lunch etc. As others have said, there is typically something good within reach, just need to find it.
The perspective that you gain on a location and otherwise is great, and it burns 4-6 hours. The only time I ever got moderately nervous was getting back later than planned in Philly, but that was also due to having to play a little Frogger on the expressway to get back to the hotel. Go find a Top Golf and smash some balls. Rent a motorcycle and have a harrowing experience in the Hollywood Hills. 😳 Update your FedEx app. Try something new like a fishing charter. Something you might never do at home. Enough time to do things might be rare, but it happens. If you’re at a wholly owned, you can afford it. |

I walk everywhere as well. I’ve walked from LGA to Times Square and back, LAX to Huntington Beach and back, PHL to downtown Delaware River and back. Lots of other big 10-20 mile walks all over the country. Walked from SJU to Old San Juan and back. MIA downtown to South Beach and back.

Not all hotels I had during Layovers at the regionals were ideal (ie: truckstop hampton inns, anywhere in mississippi, etc) but when I get a long layover now in a mid-sized city and get to stay near/in downtown usually there are urban nature trails that link neighborhoods together and it really can be a joy to go for miles while balancing the battery life of my airpods and iphone knocking out my favorite podcasts. Stopping along the way for lunch or dinner, pausing to just sit on a park bench and people watch. Popping in and out of local shops and taking time to read the historical markers along the way and not feeling guilty about a stop at an Icecream parlor on the way back to the hotel. Most of my crew colleagues look at me like i’m crazy when the next morning I say I walked 8+ miles on the layover, but it goes both ways. They brag about having binge watched a netflix series. Okay

The Huntington Beach thing. |
I got my Masters degree on the road.
VR headsets are cool. I bid around ballgames in the summer (single A through MLB). I save my favorite shows on streaming services for when I need them… ie I-95 layover with nothing better to do. I get that it can be boring, though. |

Pretty much hits the point about why you want to negotiate for hotels in decent locations: downtown, near activities and areas of interest. I never get bored. And if I did, that’d be on me. |

You're certainly right about gaining perspective on an area. That said, I think we diverge on what makes us moderately nervous. 🤣 In some areas the safety warnings seem overblown (especially daytime), but other areas definitely deserve the rep. For example, I'm not sure how far I'd want to walk from the CAE Phoenix sims. 😂 |

On a long overnight I have zero issue paying for an Uber to go out. That or I’ll rent a car and go explore, and if the crew is cool I’ll invite them along. If they aren’t? See ya tomorrow. There’s things to do everywhere, you just got to find it. And if the crew is good? It’s not so much where you are but who you’re with instead.
explore parks, museums, zoos, putt putt golf, go karts, art shows, hiking trails, monuments, top golf is a fav, comedy shows, casinos, bars, canoeing / kayaking, beach, swimming, go watch a game at a stadium or sports bar with the crew, Christmas villages / festivals, haunted houses in October, beers in the pool area if it’s decent out… the list goes on and on. If you can’t figure out anything to do, chances you’re just as boring outside of work. Hell my go to is “I’m gonna go get tacos & margaritas. I’ll be down in 15. Anyone wanna come? Cool.. if not, van times at :____ and I’ll see you then” from there we figure out other things to do. This job is as fun or miserable as you make it. |
Long overnights usually include a long walk if the area is interesting or a workout to burn off the calories I may very well put in while socializing with the crew at dinner with 🍺 or other drinks. Time really accelerates after a couple of beers and some areas have nice places for day drinking- think baseball games, especially minor league since the prices tend to be a step or two below major league beer prices. I have a Kindle, a Switch, and a personal tablet to help kill some time if nothing is around or my crew is lame. It is pretty easy to Google what to do in __________ and find some truly interesting things you either never heard of or would have never thought to do.
